Cal Poly Greek life placed on probation 

In a campus-wide announcement made Jan. 13, top Cal Poly administrators said that all Greek organizations on campus have been placed on “temporary social probation.”

“We do not take this action lightly and are making it only after careful consideration,” said the letter signed by President Jeffrey Armstrong, Vice President for Student Affairs Keith Humphrey, and Dean of Students Jean DeCosta. “In fall quarter and as recently as this past weekend, we have received reports of incidents ranging from sexual assaults to extreme intoxication of underage students at social events hosted by Greek organizations.”

Social probation, as detailed in the letter, entails a complete ban on social events hosted by any fraternity or sorority, alcohol or no. Chapter meetings and philanthropic gatherings, however, may still take place.

“Social probation will remain in effect until our students develop a plan to enhance our existing education efforts and programs and create safer social environments when organizations host parties,” the letter said. “We hope to have a thoughtful plan for culture change proposed by our students in 30 days, at which point we will revisit the social probation.”

Cal Poly spokesman Matt Lazier hadn’t responded to a request for comment in addition to several questions about the announcement from New Times as of press time.
