What do Idaho, Iowa, Oklahoma, Tennessee, and Paso Robles have in common? They all share a misunderstanding and irrational fear of critical race theory (CRT). The four states passed legislation to outlaw CRT in K-12 public schools even though CRT isn’t taught in K-12 public schools. Now the Paso Robles Joint Unified School District has joined the paranoia parade with its drafted Resolution 21-27, which prohibits “the teaching of Critical Race Theory.”

First, the actual complexity of CRT ideas is over the heads of most college undergrads. It’s taught in graduate schools, certainly not K-12. Paso has fallen into the Culture War morass by conflating some of CRT’s ideas with the notion that teaching that white people have done terrible things is racist in and of itself.

What’s even prohibited from being taught, Paso? Can teachers not teach about slavery, the American Civil War, Native American relocation and the Trail of Tears, Japanese Internment, Jim Crow laws, or civil rights legislation? These things aren’t CRT ideas. They’re historical facts! To pretend the United States doesn’t have a history of racism is to welcome a continuation of racism.

“Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it,” American philosopher George Santayana intoned in The Life of Reason: Reason in Common Sense. Are we educating our students or leading them into carefully curated ignorance? It’s not indoctrination into liberalism to teach children about America’s past mistakes. It’s history.

Sadly, transforming CRT into a boogieman is another step in the conservative-led Culture War that began with the irrational fear that teaching about socialism and Marxism in the ’30s would turn America communist. From there the fearmongering went on to the John Birch Society‘s worry that teaching about economic inequality would make America socialist, to the Canon Wars regarding what books could be taught, to handwringing over ethic studies and multicultural courses. Remember when people were losing their shit over “Ebonics“?

For those who think systemic racism doesn’t exist, well, it probably appears that way from a position of white privilege. When you’re standing atop 400 years of oppression, you barely notice all the whipped and broken bodies beneath your feet. I mean, it’s not like they’re a pea under your Dreamcloud® super soft quilted memory foam mattress!

The people who think we should ignore racism seem to have three basic arguments: “It wasn’t me! I didn’t enslave anyone.”

OK, but can you not see how white Americans, even those who weren’t slave owners, benefitted from the system of slavery and continue to?

Then there’s the “I don’t see color” crowd, which explains their outfits, but the society and culture you’re moving through certainly does see color. Why are there so few Black presidents and so many Black prisoners?

And then my favorite! Whataboutism! “If American is inherently racist, what about Oprah! Jay-Z! Obama! If they can succeed, that proves America isn’t racist!”

Except that pointing out outliers—Andrew Jackson! Jefferson Davis! David Duke!—cuts both ways.

Everyone’s favorite Texas idiot Ted Cruz described CRT as “every bit as racist as Klansmen in white sheets,” demonstrating he clearly doesn’t understand CRT any better than the reactionaries of Paso Robles, who might want to read Robin DiAngelo‘s White Fragility: Why It’s So Hard for White People to Talk About Racism. I’d also recommend Ibram X. Kendi‘s How to be an Antiracist, but I’m afraid their heads might explode.

Bottom line: Paso, you are considering outlawing teaching something that isn’t taught in K-12, and you just might pass a resolution that will prohibit your teachers from imparting actual American history to your children. Slow. Clap. Idiots. I liked you better when you were mishandling your finances.

And speaking of finances, it appears the SLO County Board of Supervisors had a come-to-Jesus moment over its gross mishandling of the county cannabis industry. Hallelujah!

Currently the county is $3.2 million in the hole with cannabis in the past four or so years. Only 20 businesses are permitted and operational! There are only a total of 15 acres of cultivation in the whole county! Let’s compare that to Santa Barbara, which has 300 acres under cultivation. SB is actually making money on cannabis—projecting nearly $17 million in taxes this year compared to just $800,000 or so in SLO.

Why? Because instead of creating policies to help facilitate this legal segment of the agricultural industry, the BOS—especially the two most conservative members, 4th District Supe Lynn Compton and 5th District Super Debbie Arnold—has made the process of acquiring grow permits exceedingly slow and prohibitively expensive. And then applications are denied because of NIMBYism.

Can someone explain to me how conservatives can be the “don’t tread on me” and “give me freedom or give me death” crowd and also the “not in my backyard” crowd? Y’all are givin’ me whiplash!

Just do what SB did—have one programmatic Environmental Impact Report (EIR) that covers the entire county, so when a new grow application is submitted, it doesn’t have to generate its own EIR. Guess which two supes were against it? Winner!

Another winner: Guy Savage, who said he’s made it through his whole county administration career without getting shredded. Congrats on your retirement, Guy, and on having the best name! Δ

Unfortunately board president Chris Arend has aligned himself with the same white supremacist philosophy promoted by notorious Central Coast hate monger Steve Edwards, continually insisting there has been no systematic racism in United States since the 1970s. The perverse irony is that they both are blatant living examples of systemic racism which they continually promote in various forms of local media and, as has been made perfectly clear by The Shredder, in Local school boards and other public agencies. The evidence of their blatant racist philosophies they continually promote can be found in their frequent contributions to the comment section of the New Times, archived recordings of Dave Congalton’s KVEC talk show and many other places in addition to public meetings of the Paso Robles school board. Voters should also note that both of these bigots are strong supporters of county supervisors Debbie Arnold and Lynn Compton who so far have refused to denounce or disavow any connection to these racist supporters. The latter should be no surprise as Compton is now notorious for having done little or nothing when arsonists burnt down multiple units of farm worker housing in her hometown of Nipomo, an unsolved crime with the perpetrators still at large. Unfortunately the perpetrators of these hate crimes and other white supremacist outrages have been provided much aid and comfort from our local political system Time and time again. The fact that Chris Arend and his philosophy is now embedded in a local school system is sad and disturbing in the antithesis of what we should be teaching our children.

Contrary to what is being tossed around by The Shredder, the idea that parents, students and local school boards are involved and engaged in what is being taught in our public schools is a good thing, and an educated society ought to be discussing how we will approach issues like ‘how to teach race in America’. Our public schools deserve guidance from the communities they serve, as democracy is born in conversation.

    As a parent of biracial children, should I have to wonder if my children will come home from school one day having been told by a teacher that everything that happens in the world is racist, and they are part of the problem because of the color of their skin? This may sound farfetched, but teaching critical race theory is coming to our K-12 schools, if it’s not already there. This would be particularly confusing in their case, but, I think any child being confronted with this would be confused, hurt, and needing to be comforted.

    The message that “anyone who does not believe in systemic racism is part of the problem” is sadly permeating all the literature on race in America today. At the National Museum of African-American History and Culture, a Smithsonian institution funded by taxpayers, officials released a document last year intended for use in schools that claimed ideas such as “hard work is the key to success” and that trying to “be polite” are evidence of an oppressive society. After being confronted on their nonsense, museum officials withdrew the document. Get it? Parents should be rightly alarmed that this effort at political correctness is knee deep integrated into their child’s education, and, rather than fight, some parents are simply fleeing the public school system.

    Examples such as the above are common in K-12 schools today. When educators treat students differently because of their skin color or say children are guilty of oppression because of their race, it violates existing law. It should go without saying, but such dogma is also dispiriting for all children, white or non-white. Think about the situation in my family, are my children to be made to feel like the oppressor or the oppressed? Teaching nonsensical critical race theory to K-12 children doesn’t make sense, and parents and school boards are rightly pushing back.

    The ideas of oppression and systemic racism come from a marxist/communist doctrine called ‘critical theory’. Over the last 40 years, whacky liberal college professors and the alt-left activists have expanded critical theory into ‘critical race theory’, a worldview that ‘questions the very foundations of the liberal order, including equality theory, legal reasoning, Enlightenment rationalism, and neutral principles of constitutional law.”

    Contrary to the Shredders criticism of states blocking the teaching of critical race theory, I believe state officials have the responsibility to make sure public school employees and those in other public institutions do not violate the Civil Rights Act or the 14th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution by calling for people to be treated differently according to race, sex, or national origin. It is perfectly reasonable for state lawmakers to reinforce existing federal law and reject the ‘woke’ culture of victimhood.

    As we see here progressives/socialist/communists have pounced on the pushback from parents and school boards as proof that moderates and conservatives are practicing cancel culture and intolerance, but, any reasonable interpretation of the 14th Amendment and Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 means that implementing critical race theory in our K-12 schools would violate existing laws. The Civil Rights Act specifically prohibits discrimination based on race, sex, or national origin.

    I think most people would agree that teachers have a responsibility to help students understand different perspectives on controversial issues, so we have to discuss all sides of an issue. The area of concern is that we are beginning to see instructional materials that apply critical race theory, proclaiming that America is systemically racist and that people should be treated differently based on the color of their skin or their national origin.

    Separating Americans by race is wrong, and it is anti ethical to the founding American motto of ‘E Pluribus Unum’, which is Latin for ‘Out of Many, One’. The ideas which create a national identity are important, and we should be a country that is coming together, not being pulled apart, piece by piece, by far-left ideologies. State legislatures, local school boards, parents, community members all have the power-and the right to prevent the whacky far left from telling students that there is no America, only a collection of different groups competing for power.

    America is the most diverse nation in the world, and we have people from all over the world of every race and ethnicity, so we should be serious about issues of race and equality, however, Americans also need to recognize the difference between separate racist acts and a legal system stacked against individuals from certain ethnicities. Racist acts are deplorable, and should be condemned, but declaring America to be a ‘racist country’ disrespects the tremendous progress that we have made in our journey towards a ‘more perfect union’, and disrespects the contributions of groundbreaking pioneers who came before us.

    The civil rights activist of the 1960’s, the veterans who fought for our values overseas, and the people who are protecting our streets and communities today should not see their contributions demeaned, and State lawmakers and local education officials must make sure new K-12 lessons do not discriminate by race, sex, national origin, or any other immutable characteristic, because such discrimination violates federal law.

    Many Americans, of every race, have helped America live up to her promise of ‘One nation under God’, and we all should hope that teaching students to treat people differently based on skin color would be so ‘far-fetched’ that we would not even need to be having this debate. Sadly, here we are.

  3. The Shredder seems unable to distinguish between history and indoctrination. The historical facts of slavery, Jim Crow, lynchings, the Tulsa massacre, etc. will continue to be taught, and speak for themselves. No one needs to be told that they are atrocities and a shameful part of our history – it is obvious. What we don’t need to be told how to think or feel about them, and we don’t need to enrich the lucrative “grievance industry” which has sprung up in academia and the media stigmatizing a race because of the acts of some of their ancestors. And we don’t need further polarization. Can you imagine how a n unemployed white coal miner in a dilapidated trailer reacts to being told about his supposed “white privilege” by a Black college student at a pricey college, who comes from an affluent background?

    Details of his personal life, including where he lives and family history change like the winds depending on what story he is pushing to support his reprehensible agenda.
    But the one thing he has been consistent with across hundreds of public comments in this publication and elsewhere , is his bigoted, anti-democratic, anti-government, white nationalist agenda that promotes violence against, and incarceration of, those who do not share his view of what America should be. One way or another he continually propagandizes about who should be silent or removed from our United States.
    There are few people participating in public discourse whose goals are more regressive and self-serving and dangerous than that of Steve Edwards, a vocal supporter of local politicians Chris Arend, Lynn Compton and Debbie Arnold.

    In my experience most of what you refer to as unemployed white coal miners in a dilapidated trailer, include those who consider anti-Black and anti- immigrant violence and discrimination to be reprehensible. Even they know that their white skin color gives them privileges and opportunities and kindnesses and protections from violence that are often denied Blacks who live in their community.

And what will the punishment be if a teacher is found to be teaching critical race theory? Will teachers have to receive instruction in critical race theory to know they’re not inadvertently teaching it? Will Paso classrooms be monitored to insure that critical race theory is not seeping into teacher’s lesson plans? Did Mr. Arend consider these issues when he wrote his dictum from the mount?

    Mr. John Donegan, Esq. has brought up a very smart point. He’s a smart guy. What about the unemployed former coal miners? Well, Johnathon, turns out that unemployed white people are more likely to receive unemployment benefits, and on average receive more unemployment compensation than their black peers.

    Really, though, it was a good try John. I mean, how can we talk about discrimination in the US when Oprah exists?

    And, Steven, our sweet Steve. He tries so hard. He puts in the work. But he can’t help but lap up the bad information he’s fed by his preferred conservative news entertainers.

    He’s so close though. He admits that we need to be able to talk about a “legal system stacked against individuals from certain ethnicities.” Steve, I hate to tell you this, but that’s what critical race theory is. Kids having uncomfortable or clumsy conversations about race is not critical race theory. You raise a good point though, kids shouldn’t have bad conversations. Me, I don’t like my kids talking about butts. I think I’ll petition the school board to make sure teachers and kids don’t talk about butts, or farts. Gross.

    As for me, I’m still worried about the true threat here, which is Sharia Law. All the good Republican sources warned me about that years ago, so I’m still watching vigilantly while you all get distracted by critical race theory. Suckers.

  9. The push against “critical race theory” is good, Shredder. This is a THEORY, which is divisive. Children, when taught in class by a grown, educated (hopefully) instructor, will generally perceive what they are being taught as truth. “Critical” is the part young people don’t usually have yet. Critical thinking can’t truly happen until you have the ability to reason, which is differently timed in most children’s lives. To teach a “critical” theory to a brain full of mush (see any college campus 2021) is to indoctrinate that mush. It can’t critique what it is being taught, so how can it determine critically what is truth and what is hyperbole? So if we truly are going to call it what it is….RACE THEORY, then it is a theory about racial assimilation or more likely, a theory of fracture between ethnicities within the construct of a country’s growth. A theory is just that, a theory. Not FACT, not TRUTH, a theory. If it is taught that way, fine. But do not be fooled by the purveyors of this theory, they purport that it is simply history. History is a FACT, not a theory. Injecting theory into history is a veiled REVISING of history to suit the whims of those who seek to gain through it’s revision, at the cost of cheating young people out of their own history. Critical race theory needs to go back to UC Berkley where it belongs.

  11. Here’s critical race theory as succinctly defined by the American Bar Association: “Critical race theory (CRT) is a practice of interrogating race and racism in society. CRT recognizes that race is not biologically real but is socially constructed and socially significant. It acknowledges that racism is embedded within systems and institutions that replicate racial inequality — codified in law, embedded in structures, and woven into public policy.” – Janel George (2021), A Lesson on Critical Race Theory, American Bar Assn. I don’t see anything in this definition that admonishes people to feel bad about themself or guilty about institutionalized racism. In fact, I think our public education system has failed for not teaching CRT.

In my mind, only an asinine or diabolical school administrator would seek to build bureaucratic impediments or in any other way discourage eager students from pursuing educational interests of their choosing. Racial, political and religious differences have been a fundamental and long reverberating historical issue In America since at least the time of landing of the pilgrims at Plymouth Rock. The issue remains as important and timely as ever.

  15. No one is saying not to teach history, just not hatred. BLM did not destroy cities and attack people because of history, it was because they were whipped up into a fury by false statements that are the basis of CRT teachings. Ibram X. Kendi’s ideas will help people understand CRT and how they want to teach it. While CRT may not be taught officially in K-12 it certainly should not be and that is what these districts are getting ahead of. We may need to go to canned lessons online so that we stop having vitriol spewed in the classroom. Tutors or helpers for a class are much less likely to try to indoctrinate children with their own opinions.

    With all due respect, I don’t believe CRT had anything to do with last summer’s riotsafter all, CRT has been around for 40 years. Those riots were set off by a series of events, including the murders of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor as well as the consistently incendiary statements from the President of the U.S. at the time, who blamed those riots on a few anarchists when the facts indicated they originated at the grass roots.

It has become fashionable for white supremacists and other conservatives to justify every asinine or diabolical attitude and action they promote by blaming, and ramping up fear of, Black Lives Matter, regardless of the lack of truth behind their politically motivated and scurrilous accusations.

    It was cell phone videos that publicized how common it is for police officers to kill unarmed black men and women that inspired the anger and frustration that erupted into unfortunate and regrettable violence and destruction of property perpetrated by both those who support racial justice and those who fight against it.
    A year ago you could count on one hand the number of people in any community who had ever heard of critical race theory. Critical race theory never harmed anyone, and if anyone has any evidence to dispute that, bring it on.

We are known as an opportunity society, where, if you are patient, get prepared and work hard, the American Dream will become a reality. It has happened for me and my immigrant wife, and it is now happening for our biracial children.

    Lets not drink the Communist BLM/Critical Race THEORY kool-aid, it is a dark prescription for American decline, and we have made far too much progress to now begin to pull our country apart. Lets decline the whacky alt-left/Communist invitation to reject our nations core values for some out-of-the-mainstream racial experiment, we are better people than to be duped by radical white liberal elites who have nothing better to do than to drum up ideas to tear America apart.

  20. Epistemology….the theory of knowledge, it’s nature and origins. Nothing about FACTS in that. A fact is provable, a theory, in theory, has yet to be proven. Therefore a theory is not a fact and should not be taught to young brains full of mush until the age of reason. Young brains full of mush should be taught provable facts (see math, science, REAL history, etc.). Not explore the liberal wish list of philosophic ideals veiled in the name of education.   21. Contrary to Mr. Dogood’s rant, in the scientific world most theories, including evolution, are generally considered both fact and theory.

    In the case of CRT, it comes from the world of history, philosophy and sociology, but much of what it posits is fact. I dare Mr. Dogood to explain to me why black Americans lag so far behind white Americans economically, despite the fact they have been free for over 160 years, and, according to those who deny systemic racism, have had the same opportunities as white Americans.

    In FACT, the average white household has nearly eight times more wealth than the average black household. This is a pretty firm FACT, and, in my opinion, reveals that there are “systemic” reasons why blacks have been excluded from building wealth equal to white Americans.

    If everything was equal, why wouldn’t blacks be closer to whites in wealth? Riddle me that, Mr. Dogwood.

    CRT acknowledges this and urges change. One way to start is to teach the facts of this nation, including the chattel slavery that went on for 250 years, the subsequent Jim Crow laws which segregated and, more recently the de facto segregation which kept black families out of certain neighborhoods. This is not even to mention the totally unequal treatment of whites and blacks in the legal system. Although blacks make up only 13% of the population, they make up more than one-third of the U.S. prison population.

I am grateful to the Shredder for his succinct analysis of the white nationalist effort at the Paso Robles School Board in its completely symbolic effort to ban Critical Race Theory . . . . . which – WAIT FOR IT – was never planned to be taught to K-12 students in the first place! I am past being shocked or even amazed by the insurgent racism from our county’s white nationalist/Trumpist base. They have abandoned all interests in serious policy proposals or discussions and have embraced bogus culture war issues.

  23. This piece on Paso Robles and the resolution to ban CRT shows that Shredder is ignorant about CRT . If you want to understand CRT, read the draft resolution (available online after being published with the agenda for the 22 June meeting in item J.3 – https://agendaonline.net/public/Meeting.as…). Read the operative points in the draft resolution and ask yourself if even just one of the numbered premises and lettered doctrines should be taught to children. For example, should children be taught point e (“An individual, by virtue of his or her race or sex, bears responsibility for actions committed in the past or present by other members of the same race or sex.”)? Of course not. Any rational person will have the same answer for every other point. Shredder also shows total ignorance about CRT when he argues that banning CRT is in effect whitewashing US history. We have no intention of doing any such thing. That was obvious when we discussed and approved the ethnic studies course on 13 April. Shredder and folks who agree with his position on CRT should at least take the time to learn what CRT is by reading the standard textbook titled “Critical Race Theory” by Delgado and Stefancic. Unfortunately, Shredder and others who praise CRT apparently don’t have enough time to do even a minimal amount of study before spouting off.

  24. Paso Robles School Board President Chris Arend fails to mention that his resolution is based on a imagined hypothetical situation in Paso Robles school district. In other words, his entire argument is what is known in the legal field as a straw man argument, a pejorative term for a defense of actions that is not based on logic and the reality of the situation at hand. It is simply ham fisted rhetorical trickery in support of a personal agenda.
    Nobody is teaching critical race theory in the Paso Robles school district.

    Prior to Arend presenting his resolution, I was not aware of any formal proposal to offer instruction of critical race theory in the Paso Robles school district.

    Arend is building up the controversy to be his political soapbox from which to issue unprecedented rules limiting educational opportunities for our youth, at the expense of expanding them. Thats not what a competent educational leader should be doing. Obviously.

    Arend has in essence created a problem that did not exist in the school district previously.
    Considering the timing and the effort he put into this, it is logical to conclude Arend is doing this for political reasons. Its an insensitive and diabolical ploy to inject a fresh level of racial bias into the school system.

    It is certainly causing more controversy and causing more division in our community.

    This coming from a central coast school board president who has spent considerable time and effort publicly insisting that there has been no systemic racism in the United States since the 1970s. Arend has made these racially charged and absurd claims on the radio many times, evidence of which can be accessed via the KVEC Dave Congalton radio show archives. Equally concerning is that many of Arends public comments are terribly condescending and disrespectful toward students in his district The antithesis of The kind of attitude that would inspire and elevate young minds.

    There is no wholesome reason for Arend to be doing this, Although we can expect he will claim moral superiority backed by convoluted legalese, a tactic he has employed throughout his career to decidedly mixed and rarely wholesome results. Now hes forcing his tactics on school children and parents. Not good.

    Students and voters in the Paso Robles school district should be well aware that their school district is being led by an insensitive bigot who is going out of his way to create controversy and racial division for his own personal political benefit. Please consider that the next time there is an election of school board members. Thank you

  25. Not surprised Mr. Arend couldn’t resist weighing in. I for one, do understand CRT, quite well I think. CRT examines U.S history through the lens of racism. It arose because many black scholars felt the civil rights legislation of the 1960’s was not being followed up in the ensuing decades and the facts would bear that out.

    Many of the Great Society programs were scrapped under Nixon and ReaganReagan even had the gall to raise lower income earners’ taxes while at the same time lowering top tax brackets for the wealthy, an obvious slight to folks who were trying to pull themselves up by their bootstraps.

    CRT proponents claim that the U.S. was established on the theft of land (already several populations living in North America when white folks landed) and labor (black slaves imported from Africa). Not only that, but federal laws which consistently held up the power of the white majority with Supreme Court decisions such as Scott, Plessy, Korematsu and others reveal white racism. More recently, decisions such as Citizens United have only increased the power of the status quo. This structure continues to preserve the unequal treatment of Americans based on race.

    Don’t think so. In a recent Brookings Institute study, the wealth gap between white and black shows that very little has changed since the 1960’s, no matter how much “no systemic racism exists in America” proponents such as Mr. Arend squawk about it. Blacks still lag far behind. Stats vary, but the average black family is worth far less than the average white family by as much as 10-1.

    I for one think it’s time we changed this. If it happens through education, all to the good. If reparations are considered, even better.

    The fact that the Rush Limbaugh radio program was subsidized by a shady corporation with possible ties to Russia and pushed onto the radio waves of thousands of radio stations across the country free of charge is a clear example of systemic racism at its worst.

After researching CRT months ago, I found Critical Race Theory to be so racist and offensive, I thought it was a minority racist fringe movement. As a minority I’m shocked and feel betrayed by liberals to even suggest something so belligerent as Critical Race Theory. Minorities can be racist too. It’s not Liberal White America’s job to define nor to teach race to minorities. Minorities will teach their children about their own cultural beliefs about race.

  35. The thing is, there was no critical race theory course being planned in the Paso Robles school district. The school board presidents entire resolution is based on his imaginary hypothetical situation and racially charged fear mongering.
    But if Arends resolution is passed It gives him a new opportunity to intimidate teachers who he doesnt happen to like and Criticize teaching that he feels doesnt match his own interpretation of history.
    Arends is in fact opening the door to injecting his own brand of racism into the school system.

The resolution gives administrators too much arbitrary power based on the gray areas within The resolution.

  36. Fascinating. The Shredder evidently must have grown up in an alternate world community. Slavery, Jim Crow, and Racism were taught in schools in the 1960’s and 1970’s. MLK jr is one of the most revered figures in history. His work, his beliefs, and his faith is one of the most impacting events of the last century. Today, teachings and media and people like the Shredder have trampled all over MLK and his beliefs. We are all one, one people, one nation, and we all have the same opportunities.

    Take for instance a poor Black child, whose father and step father abandoned him, and he was raised in poverty eventually because the president of the US. Or take a young Black man from Harlem, son of Jamaican immigrants, and who worked in a furniture store eventually became General of the US Military and Secretary of State. Or another who had severe dyslexia growing up in South Los Angeles, who eventually became president and CEO of Pacific Bell. This is the land of opportunity, and people of all races have the same opportunities to achieve the goals they set out to reach. We limit ourselves because we have fears of our own. Do we need to teach systemic racism, or do we need to teach confidence? Do we need to teach critical race, or rather critical lies that hold people back?

    It seems we have gone back and removed all the things we learned under MLK, and have thrown them all out the door and now resorting to blaming others who had nothing to do with a persons’ life decisions, and want to hold those others accountable for someone elses actions (or inactions). The question is, can anyone who isn’t caucasian succeed in the USA? The answer is yes. We need to stop teaching that you will never get ahead until others are destroyed or neutralized because of their own race. That is indeed teaching that racism is the only option. That is wrong and inhumane.

    We need to teach unity, and that all Americans are one people, one race, one mind joined together through a unique country that can achieve great things by working together, not by separating, judging, isolating, and calling each other cute newfound names.

    Progressive means moving forward, not backwards. Mr. Shredder, you need to rethink what your purpose and goal is in life as a blogger. The leaders of the Alt -Left (white liberal elites, college professors, liberal media, etc.) purposefully recruit low-information voters and seek out easily impressionable college student dupes’ to do their bidding. Why does the average white household hold about $180,000 in wealth while the average black household has only about $25,000 in wealth. If this were the egalitarian paradise you claim, wouldn’t these numbers be at least somewhat closer?

No greater wealth gap exists than in the San Francisco Bay area, a place that brags about how they are the most “progressive” place on earth. A place that promotes and nurtures wealth gaps. One of the researchers said, “Black people tend to be overrepresented as walkers in this country. This is not by choice. In many cases, Black folks cannot afford motor vehicles. And people that walk in this country tend to experience a much, much higher rate of traffic fatality. We’re talking eight to 10 times more. It’s a perfect storm of a lot of horrible forces.”

    Do you believe that students and others should be taught to judge people on the basis of their skin color? The “critical race theory” crowd argues that many of the ills affecting society come from the notion of White privilege, and that Whites — even small children — must be punished for the alleged sins of their ancestors, even if they never held slaves or treated Blacks poorly.

    Discrimination on the basis of skin color, race or ethnicity has been illegal in the U.S. for more than a half century, and most Americans of all races are not bigots. Businesspeople who hire employees or serve customers on the basis of race or sex, rather than competency, put themselves at a competitive disadvantage and, ultimately, are forced to change their policies or go out of business — without being ordered to by government officials.

    When engaged in policy debates, it is good to look at the facts and the data to the extent that it exists. Fortunately, the United States Census Bureau has compiled very detailed data on the incomes of Americans by race, ethnic origin, sex, marital status, religion, etc. The data comes from the Bureau’s 2018 “American Community Survey” (the latest available).     If success is really based on skin color, it would be expected that those with darker skins would have noticeably lower incomes than those with lighter skin tones — but is that true? Most people who pay attention are aware that on average Asian Americans have higher incomes than White Americans, who in turn have higher incomes than Hispanic Americans, who in turn have higher incomes than African Americans.

    As can be seen in the table, Indian Americans (whose ancestors are from India) have the highest average incomes, even though most of them are some shade of brown). Chinese, Japanese, and Korean Americans all have higher average incomes than white Americans — with skin colors on average slightly darker than the average White American. The Taiwanese are Chinese, most of whose ancestors moved from mainland China in the last 70 years. So why do Taiwanese Americans have higher average incomes than Chinese Americans? Clearly, something other than skin color causes the differences.

    Among Americans who trace their ancestries back to some European country (even though most White Americans have a mixture of several nationalities), the Austrian (a German-speaking nation) Americans have the highest average income levels. At the same time, Appalachian Americans who are a measurable sub-group of White Americans have lagged behind for reasons having nothing to do with skin color. (Note: Many of the Appalachian Americans have ancestors from Scotland who had fled the English in the century before the American Revolution. By moving to the isolated hills and valleys of Appalachia, they were largely left alone by the English.)

    The term Hispanic covers those White Europeans of pure Spanish origin to the typical brown-skinned Central American whose ancestors were more often American Indian than Spanish. The term explains a language group, not a genetic or income group.

    Most American Blacks were descended from West African tribes, including what is now Nigeria. The Census Bureau differentiates those of African American ancestry whose forbearers came as slaves in contrast to those who came of their own free will in recent decades and who now have a higher average income than White Americans. Why is that?

    Before the Civil War, White Americans were able to obtain wealth by obtaining free land provided they “worked it” for a few years and from skills that they obtained through education. Slaves could neither acquire land or education (in some states it was illegal to teach them to read and write). Their big disadvantage was not in their skin color but in the fact that, unlike most other Americans, they had fewer ways of acquiring property and education.

    Native American Indians, by being put in common ownership reservations (socialist organizations) without individual property rights, were also put into a very difficult disadvantage.

    If you really want to help those groups who are lagging, find ways (and there are many) of enabling them to obtain secure property rights to productive assets and provide them with marketable skill sets — math, science, information theory, etc. — but not counterproductive education in “grievance studies” (e.g., sociology, Black and women’s studies, etc.) that actually reduces their chances of obtaining well-paying jobs.

Looking at the upvote/downvote tallies on this issue, it is clear that the SLO Progressives are NOT FOOLING ANYBODY with their socialist nonsense, and no society has done well by reallocating wealth from one group to another. Ideas like Critical Race Theory, BLM, and Slavery Reparations are foolishness, and implementing them will actually do a great disservice to Black Americans.

    If the Progressive/Socialist/Communist White Liberal Elite crowd wants to buy into a false narrative, so be it, but leave the rest of us out of their foolish nonsense. If they prefer to teach their own children that Whites are evil and must be punished, so be it, but leave OUR CHILDREN ALONE. If they want to give THEIR MONEY away to Black Americans, so be it, but hands off OUR MONEY, we don’t have to fund such nonsense. The idea that people who have never been enslaved would be given money by people who have never owned slaves is preposterous, and, if Black Americans want to do better in average yearly income, then simply looking at the the above chart shows that income level is not based on skin color.

    It is not a secret that America is an opportunity society, people who act on this do well making money. 🙂

    Some of our whacky liberal friends want to maintain the illusion, however the rest of us now clearly understand that the modern, so-called ‘progressives’ are just rebranded socialist/communists. In my opinion, this is the wrong prescription for our local community and our nation, as they will try to pull America apart, one issue at a time.

    We are better people than to be fooled by the great lie, socialism and communism NEVER worked in any country they were forced on, and smart people will not embrace the failed ideology of progressivism.

  46. The Shredder strikes again. Thank you for your thoughtful commentary on critical race theory and why we need it in our classrooms. Call it CRT or whatever. Just teach what has really happened in history. African Americans and other people of color continue to be discriminated against in housing rights, civil rights, voting, bank loans, areas where they can live for decades. Read We were Eight Years in Power by Coates for the facts. Since the Civil War reconstruction (see Reconstruction documentary 2020 on this) and African Americans were freed, white power has sought to find ways to keep African Americans from having all the rights most of us take for granted.

    Our children/young adults deserve to know the truth.
