In 2021, we have seen far too many attacks on our right to vote. I’m sure many of us heard about the law in Georgia that made it illegal to give voters water while they’re waiting in line to vote. Well, for every voter suppression law we did hear about, there are 20 more we didn’t. So far this year, 17 states enacted 28 new laws that make it more difficult for eligible Americans to cast their ballots, according to the Brennan Center for Justice.
The only answer to this crisis is a response from the federal government. We need lawmakers in Congress to pass legislation that will create national standards to safeguard our right to vote as soon as possible.
There are already two bills in the mix that, if passed, would go a long way to securing our freedom to vote. The first is the John Lewis Voting Rights Act and the second is the For the People Act. Congress has everything it needs to pass sweeping voting rights protection with these pieces of legislation. I am asking them not to squander it or let the filibuster get in the way.

If you compare the Georgia law with that of Colorado and many other states, you will find it is much more liberal. The reason for this spate of new laws is fear of corruption of our voting processes, which a very large percentage of the voters feel occurred in the last election.
One cannot dismiss the over 2,000 affidavits by observers of our voting system who claimed that they directly witnessed fraudulent actions. Anyone who has spent time watching the videos of some of these processes has to be shocked by these images.
The ideal state of our laws would be that they balance enablement of voting with protection against fraudulent voting. Allowing a fraudulent vote is the equivalent of denying a legal vote in distortion of our democratic processes.
The only thing being “suppressed” by the new laws is the voter fraud which the Democrats figure is necessary for them to win elections. There is nothing unreasonable about requiring an ID, something which is required for buying guns, flying and collecting welfare. Nor is it unreasonable to prohibit party operatives from “harvesting” ballots, and giving them the opportunity to “help” the voters complete the ballot, or to discard the ballots that they don’t like. How burdensome is it to require that voters register BEFORE the day of the election so that qualification can be checked? The Democrats seem determined to make voting so “convenient” that voters will be spared the trouble of making those difficult decisions themselves, and can just have the Democratic Party cast their ballot for them.
I cannot help wondering how I, as a permanent Absentee Voter since – I dunno, it was a long time ago about when I was told I am no longer on the Jury List because of my age and hearing loss – will show an ID to turn in my Absentee ballot along with my son’s.
Does anyone know why our comments are “centered” instead of aligned “left”
