To the Shredder and political cartoonist Russell Hodin:
How incredibly sad and disappointing it is to see a legitimate debate about an obviously controversial issue slide immediately into hyperbole and name-calling.
More extreme supporters of critical race theory (CRT) label anyone who disagrees with its inclusion in schools as racists. Opponents of CRT similarly label anyone who supports CRT as Socialist/Marxist as well as racist.
The NAACP of SLO portrays the Paso Robles Joint Unified School District (PRJUSD) Board of Trustees as somehow attempting to lynch minorities under a likeness of a gallows. New Times follows up with a cartoon image of a noose hanging from the PRJUSD oak tree logo suggesting the district motto is “Protecting White Privilege” (Hodin, June 24) and an opinion piece wrongly conflating the debate on CRT with the recently-adopted ethnic studies curriculum (“Mighty white of you, Paso,” June 24).
These exaggerated insults do nothing to further healthy debate and solely serve to inflame extreme perspectives. The board of trustees has openly and honestly engaged in a public debate of the ethnic studies curriculum. In that discussion, there was never any proposal to ignore or omit historical instances of racism. The only restriction was that historical atrocities be presented in historical context, not through a contemporary lens and that presentations and supplemental readings be balanced. At no point were any atrocities, be it the Tulsa massacres, Jim Crow laws, Japanese internment, lynching, or any of the evils of slavery to be ignored.
What was and is of concern are extreme efforts to rewrite American history, out of context, and extreme conclusions such as those reached in San Francisco that schools named for Washington, Lincoln, Jefferson, Grant, and others be renamed so that no one who ever said or did anything now objectionable be honored, regardless of the balance of their historical legacy. Abraham Lincoln? Ulysses S. Grant? Seriously? Not pure enough?
CRT is loosely defined in ways that can be spun as fairly innocuous or quite extreme. Experts disagree on what the implications for its instruction are, but the appropriate audience is clearly post-secondary. The board of trustees entertained debate of CRT as a controversial issue subject to Administrative Regulation 6144, a portion of which stipulates approval only if, “The discussion does not reflect adversely upon persons because of their race, sex, color, creed, national origin, ancestry, handicap, or occupation.”
I have stood at the former cell of Nelson Mandela outside Cape Town and listened to a former fellow political prisoner (now tour guide) describe Mandela’s 18 years there. I have toured the National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington, DC, and the Mississippi Civil Rights Museum in Jackson and walked past the pillars that list the actual lynchings that occurred each year. Words fail to capture the absurdly inconsequential reasons for the murders. I lived through and participated in the civil rights demonstrations of the 1960s. I remember when racism was overt and institutionalized, without question or debate. I remember Dr. King asking that we be judged by the content of our character not the color of our skin. To equate this debate in Paso Robles to, “Mississippi in the 1960s” is really quite absurd.
Serious issues around race remain in our country; no one can credibly deny that fact, and the incredible hypocrisy of the promise of our Declaration of Independence and Constitution as juxtaposed to the unspeakable horror of slavery, the 3/5ths compromise, Jim Crow laws, and the like. To suggest nothing has changed though, and to equate even discussing contemporary issues with lynching is incredibly exaggerated and, at least in my mind, an insult to the memory of those who were violently attacked and murdered.
I am proud of the compromise reached in the PRJUSD concerning the ethnic studies curriculum. In it, CRT may not be taught as accepted fact but may be discussed as a controversial issue as appropriate to the class and grade level. A balanced reading list including varied perspectives is required.
Some have argued teachers have adequate training and experience and need no board direction. Academic freedom has also been mentioned. To be clear, the PRJUSD Board of Trustees has not only the right but the responsibility to supervise what is taught in our schools. This is not college; “academic freedom” in high school is in no way comparable to the college level where students are adults and there voluntarily.
Also, it is important to remember that parents have had the opportunity this year, with distance learning as their only option, to be much more involved in and observant of their student’s classroom instruction. With this added exposure—and in addition to an appreciation by many of how difficult teaching can be—have come many more questions about what is being taught and what teachers have posted in their rooms. There are limits on teachers’ actions while “on the clock” and specifically while in front of a captive audience of minor students.
The district has provided guidance as to which classes and under what circumstances controversial issues should and should not be part of the curriculum. Some of what was observed has led parents to question legitimately the adherence of several teachers to the approved curriculum. These are all legitimate issues for the board of trustees to consider and as we continue to identify issues and address them openly, I hope and trust there will be more legitimate debate and less name-calling, hyperbole, and pandering to one’s base, whoever that may be. Dr. Curt Dubost is the superintendent of the Paso Robles Joint Union School District. Send a response for publication to letters@newtimesslo.com.
This article appears in Jul 8-18, 2021.

I have lived in Mississippi. I can tell you with authority that Paso Robles school board president Chris Arend is more blatantly and publicly racist and condescending towards students than any 21st century Mississippi school administrator I know of. Mississippi is moving forward in a good direction; the Paso Robles school district, not so much. In fact, the Paso Robles school district is being aimed in a completely opposite direction by a man who had the nerve to claim publicly many times that systemic racism ended in the United States 50 years ago. Yeah, right.
I AGREE with Dr, Curt Dubost!
Despite the hysterics of the progressive alt-left radicals, most Americans DO NOT want our public K-12 schoolchildren indoctrinated into crazy leftist ideas about racist Critical Race Theory, Project 1619, and reparations for slavery, enough is enough. The evidence is clear about the left’s desire to force schoolchildren to be brainwashed into these whacky theories, and mainstream leaders are right to question and pushback on the attempt to introduce ideological politics into what should be an apolitical institution.
Although the liberal big lie asserts that their is no plan to introduce CRT to our public schoolchildren, just this week the nations largest public teacher’s unions (The American Federation of Teachers & the National Education Association)hosted national leaders of the Critical Race Theory for training on how to introduce CRT into our schools. If no plan to introduce racist CRT to kids existed, why are the NEA and the AFT so closely aligned with national CRT leaders like Dr. Ibram X Kendi, a professor at Boston University?
“Hear from Dr. Ibram X. Kendi in this free-ranging discussion with student activists and AFT members on his scholarship and on developing anti-racist mindsets and actions inside and outside classrooms,” the agenda for the conference says. Clearly, our largest teachers unions, coordinating with the leftist Democrat Party, ARE planning to further expand racist CRT into our public schools.
The National Education Association recently passed a resolution pledging to “fight back” against critics of teaching the theory in schools. As part of its effort, the NEA will work to publicize “an already-created, in-depth study that critiques white supremacy, anti-Blackness, anti-Indigeneity, racism, patriarchy … capitalism … and other forms of power and oppression,” according to the NEA site.
Critical Race Theory is a form of Marxism and an attempt to indoctrinate school children that America is inherently a racist country, and districts like Paso Robles are joining a growing list of local and state governments who are taking a pass on this leftist attempt to further diminish America and her institutions. The alt-left progressive attacks on America do not stop at calling America a racist society, they also include attacks on the nuclear family, policing, the military and even capitalism.
We should not subject our young schoolchildren to this nonsense, and please support efforts to stop the introduction of these racist and divisive ideas into what should be OUR non-partisan public institutions.

Steve Edwards: How about we all cut a deal? Leftists can stop looking for a racist motivation behind every conservative action and rightists can stop calling every government program “Communist.”
Awful generous of you to call what you’re participating in “legitimate debate,” Curt.
Me: Please eat your vegetables.
A literal child: No! I don’t wanna! You can’t make me! They’re gross! They make me sick!
Me: It won’t make you sick. Stop arguing about this.
Curt Dubost: Why are you shutting down legitimate debate?
Does anyone know anybody at all on the central coast who is making any type of formal proposal to teach critical race theory in any public school? I’ve never heard of anyone. It’s a ridiculous lie that teaching the facts of slavery and racism in general is some sort of a so-called Marxist or communist plot.
Steve Edwards and Chris Arend continually bring up critical race theory as a rhetorical weapon to
Inflame extremists and potential domestic terrorists and attack those who stand up against white supremacist attitudes and actions in our community.
Rather than offering a voice of reason, I think Curt Dubost has actually added flames to the fire of the the Paso Robles School Board’s CRT debate. Mr. Dubost seems to have checked out of his civil rights ferver after the 60s. Important laws were passed, but are eroding as we speak. Apparently Mr. Dubost has not seen, “I am Not Your Negro” or read “the Diary of Malcom X”, or “The New Jim Crow.” Then, he might understand why no “voila” moment occured with the passage of the ccivil rights laws and certainly no woke moment for Whites occured. Things have not improved much for Blacks and minorities since then. Otherwise, why aren’t Black people better off as a group? Why are 40% of African-Americans on welfare and assisted housing? Why are more of them in prison than any other ethnic group? Won’t these and more questions come up in some form in classrooms? That’s when the “controversial” fact of sytemic racism will rear its ugly head. Kids will ask questions and what will Mr. Dubost and company tell teachers to say, or forbid them say?
One thing is for sure, Curt Dubosts waffling comments give aid and comfort to local racists. The fact that Dubost has visited a civil rights museum does not change that. The fact that Steve Edwards is giving Mr. Dubosts comments a thumbs up confirms it.
It seems that Mr. Dubosts comments are aimed at appeasing the cranky power – hungry racists in position to have him fired from his job in the Paso Robles school system.
This is s perfect example of local racists using The specter of critical race theory to divide our community and grab power over what is taught and what is prohibited from being taught in our local school districts. In essence, Mr. Dubost is one of the victims of systemic racism and fear-mongering in his own school district and his comments reflect that.
It is funny to see the white liberal elite trolls on here desperately trying to defend the racist Critical Race Theory, and now that the American public is getting wind of their whacky attempt to introduce racial division to our K-12 schoolchildren, their stock is plummeting even further.
The fact is, Dr, Curt Dubost eloquently engaged in community debate and discussion to promote informed decision-making, and all these trolls could do is jump to a reactive criticism, because that’s all they got. They struggle to defend the absurd idea that we ought to experiment with our K-12 public schoolchildren, so they have to pivot to petty troll putdowns, sad.
When the dust settles on Critical Race Theory, I am confident that the diverse American public will REJECT introducing racial guilt to young children. The idea that any child ought to be made to feel guilt for their skin color is beyond absurd, and the CRT idea just goes to show how out in left field today’s so-called progressives really are. They support race hustlers and poverty pimps, but not real progress for women and minorities.
America is an opportunity society, and if anyone wants to improve their position in life, they simply need to follow the time-honored American recipe of hard work, preparedness, and patience. They will not succeed by blaming others, crying wolf, and refusing to mainstream. Blacks made far more progress improving their condition before the race hustlers and the poverty pimps moved in, and I see many racial minorities making progress simply by disavowing the liberal elites who want to use them as campaign props.
As we know, ideas like Critical Race Theory, Project 1619, Slave Reparations, BLM/Antifa violence, Communist/Progressivism, etc., etc., etc. will only serve to work against the real interest of people struggling. People who want to get ahead in life need to throw off the chains they’ve locked themselves in and make the progress they desire. There is no secret to what needs to be done, and the only conspiracy in America is a conspiracy to make you happy.
The American tradition of peace and freedom is the envy of the world.

Reject Biden/Harris American Decline
Disease is down, the economy is up, and world – wide respect has been restored in the USA since Joe Biden and Kamala Harris took office.
The US government is being managed much more effectively since Joe Biden and Kamala Harris took office. Pretty much everything about the United States has improved since Joe Biden took office. What’s not to like (if you are not a white supremacist or domestic terrorist) about the United States since Joe Biden took office?
Considering all the cancerous extremist propaganda we get right here, why would we need to read more by some rich fool-tool who doesn’t even live around here? Don’t we have enough crap in our lives?
I think it is obvious that the American public DOES NOT want Critical Race Theory anywhere near our schoolchildren, the purpose of our public schools is to educate, not indoctrinate. Moreover, it shows the insidious nature of the socialists/progressive crowd that they would want to put a guilt trip on children, who have nothing whatsoever to do with any perceived historical racism.
America is the most diverse country in the world, and we have done more than any other country to promote gender and racial equality, only the whacky alt-left wants to sow division and discord with their pathetic agenda of race hatred, race hostility and race reparations. Once normal Americans understand what they are trying to pull, it is overwhelmingly rejected. Their agenda includes promoting racial and gender discord, they seek to divide our country and turn American against American.
The upvote/downvote tallies reveals that people reject the extreme left, and taxpayers and parents appreciate that the Paso Robles School District has the good sense to reject the racist critical race theory. This nonsensical theory has no business being hoisted upon young, impressionable children, and the leadership in Paso Robles deserves to be commended for taking action on this important matter.
If you want to be trusted, be honest.
NO critical race theory! Not now, not ever. Marxism is in it’s death throes. The American public sees and REJECTS it’s attempt (via the complicit left) to tear down our way of life. Leftist politics are DEFUNCT. Equity is NOT equality and cannot be disguised from the public in any fashion that would end in it’s adaptation. FREE and EQUAL, not free and equitable. Democrats will be shown the door in 2022 and beyond. There will be no indoctrination of a new generation of useful idiots, the plan-demic will be exposed to the people and hell will follow for the left. They are desperate to keep us all afraid and “in check” with their agendas. Parler and Rumble will increase freedom in social media to counter the facebooks, youtubes, twitters, etc. Conservative ideas win, always will because rational thought and behavior is preferable to chaos and tumult. These local papers will be the springboard for messaging at the local levels. Any liberals that can be saved from their delusional beliefs will come to reason. The rest will live in the riverbed or motel 6 with their brethren. They will continue on to their desired self hating demise caused by their insane ideology without taking the rest of us down with them.
