Speaking of Oktoberfest

Looking to get some extra mileage out of those rented lederhosen? Vendor spaces are available for Los Osos/Baywood Park’s 36th Annual Oktoberfest & Car Show by the Bay, slated for Oct. 26 in Downtown Baywood Park. The free community event will feature the beers of Central Coast Brewing Co., Cambria Beer Co., Figueroa Mountain Brewery, and Tap It Brewery, among others. Live tunes will enliven the day thanks to Tony Harmon & Nathan Towne, Stereo Steve, Soul Sauce, Panga, and Natural Incense. Got kids? A bounce house and face painter will be on-site and a cakewalk is also planned (for more information, visit lobpchamber.org). Wunderbar!

Hot potatoes

Stop the presses! New Times Arts Editor Jessica Peña has recently discovered the delicious burritos available at Boni’s tacos in Cambria, and she wants to shout it from the rooftops—or at least from her hot sauce-splattered desk (check out the mouth-watering menu at Bonistacos.com) … Don’t be brainwashed by fancy labels: A recent study performed by Dr. Antonia Mantonakis of Consumer Cognition Lab Group showed that wine sales increased by 500 percent when the winemaker’s signature was present on the label. Takeaway point: Just because there’s an ornate scrawl on your wine, that doesn’t necessarily make it “fine.”

Roll up those sleeves

Do you make a really mean chili? Have big opinions about beans vs. meat content? Why not put yours to the test at the Rotary Club of Templeton’s first-ever Templeton Chili Cook-Off? Your special recipe will be on display at the community’s Founder’s Day Fair kicking off on Main Street this Nov. 1 (sign up for the chance to win $500 cash and bragging rights by emailing [email protected]) … Sunset SAVOR the Central Coast has donated a working farm to Georgia Brown Elementary School in Paso Robles. Thanks to the new plot of land, prepared by local nonprofit One Cool Earth, kids will have a chance to try their green thumbs with a plethora of olive and fig trees, edible flowers, cabbage, kale, strawberries, and herbs. Good luck, little farmers!
