BITES

The block surrounding the historic Fremont Theatre in San Luis Obispo is filled with a striking array of excellent restaurants including sushi bar Aisuru (formerly known as Shin’s) and the upscale Italian cuisine of Buona Tavola, so the excellent service of Mexican gourmet restaurant Que Pasa, one of Monterey Street’s newest additions in dining, came as no surprise.

Founded in 1999 by brothers Omarand Baldo Cisneros, Que Pasa now has six full service locations as well as a sister chain of counter service restaurants known as Los Hermanos due to the Cisneros’ long professional bond.

Over the past year, Que Pasa has been noted by SLO residents for a variety of dishes. Arguably their most popular dish is Molcajete (named for the Spanish word for the combination of stone tools mortar and pestle), which includes a tortilla containing napales salad, chili, grilled onion, green sauce, and chorizo. They also house a wide selection of seafood entrees such as their pescado vallarta and ahi tuna tacos.

But perhaps their widest range can be found on their beverages menu, as you will be hard pressed to find another Mexican restaurant that houses exactly 100 varieties of tequila, as well as handmade margaritas, mojitos, and other specialty drinks with alluring names like Electric Lemonade, Tormenta Azul, Passion Volcano, Latin Leprechaun, and (zoinks!) Scooby Snack.

Que Pasa is located at 1009 Monterey St. in SLO. Their kitchen is open from 11 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. while their bar closes at 11 p.m.
