We commend the SLO County Board of Supervisors for hosting a mandated TRUTH Act public forum as part of the essential need to hold government to the highest standards of transparency and accountability. We look forward to a frank and comprehensive presentation from Sheriff Ian Parkinson.

The California Legislature enacted the Transparent Review of Unjust Transfers and Holds Act—the TRUTH Act—to ensure trust between the community and local law enforcement during Immigration and Customs Enforcement activities in California. The recent and escalating militarization of ICE activities, its use of force and intimidation, and its failure to protect civil liberties have eroded that trust. The resulting climate of fear and distrust make it hard, if not impossible, for our police to do their job. Public trust that our government and its agencies will do the right thing is central to democracy. Without it, we are adrift as a nation.

The U.S. League of Women Voters has called for a congressional investigation into recent federal immigration enforcement actions. The League of Women Voters of California is considering policies to hold ICE accountable for its actions in California. One proposal is to create “ICE-free zones” on county-owned property—a meaningful step toward protecting public spaces and upholding community safety. We urge the board to consider this.

The 1948 Universal Declaration of Human Rights identifies freedom from fear as a basic human right for everyone, immigrant or not. Our local institutions must ensure that everyone is safe from unwarranted and illegal immigration enforcement.

  1. What is “unwarranted” immigration enforcement? It seems like the folks who insisted on maintaining an open border, and allowing millions of illegals to pour in, have now unsuprisingly deemed the return to enforcing our immigration laws “unwarranted”. The 2024 election made it pretty clear that most voters want our borders secure and our immigration laws enforced.

    1. “Unwarranted” includes entering private property without a warrant, excessive use of force, racial profiling and violence against US citizens exercising their constitutional rights. Reasonable people are against open borders, yet expect due process and professional behavior from Federal law enforcement.

      1. Warrants? I am no specialist in criminal law, but a large number of the illegals arrested had been previously arrested and order deported, and were released by Biden on a sort of “immigration parole”. Part of parole is agreeing to warrantless future searches, and I am guessing that this occurred here but is being ignored by the media to serve their own purposes. Excessive use of force? A pretty subjective measure. Fighting with cops and resisting arrests entitles them to use the amount of force required to overcome resistance and effect the arrest. I haven’t seen force used against people who just submit to arrest, just mainly against protestors who are trying to block enforcement and fight with ICE. Violence against US citizens exercising their rights? There is no right to block streets and interfere with law enforcement, no matter how strongly someone feels about it. Leftist figures like Walz and Frey have called upon their followers to swarm into the streets to fight back ICE. They are the ones reasonable for the violence.

  2. The dollar lost 10% of its value last year. Our immigration problems, and there are many, will be solved by a Depression. No one will want to immigrate to the US when we are bringing wheelbarrows of cash to the grocery store just to buy a loaf of bread. The dollar’s status as the global reserve currency is in serious question. The world has stopped buying our Treasury notes and there’s no other way to find our deficit other than to have the Fed intervene. The problems of 2008 were never resolved. Our economy will collapse by the end of this year

  3. The dollar has lost 1.5% of its value on an index just this month, last year it lost 10% of its value, lol. We could literally see the dollar lose 20% of its value by the end of this year compared to the last two years, lol. We’re so screwed. And why? The dollar is losing its status as a reserve currency, the works is dumping Treasuries, no one is buying our Treasuries, and BRICS nations are starting to use the gold backed Yuan. We. Are. Done. Hello Weimar!

  4. By 2030, the BRICS countries will have a gold backed settlement mechanism called the Unit, we are TOAST:

    “Key Characteristics of “The Unit”:
Not a Physical Currency: It is intended as a “digital trade currency” or “benchmark token” specifically for cross-border settlements between central banks and large institutions, not for everyday public use.
Asset-Backed: Each unit is designed to be pegged to 1 gram of gold to provide a neutral value and reduce reliance on the US dollar. “
