In living rooms and bedrooms, children of meth users get a front-row seat for the frightening scene of a country struggling to deal with a drug problem, and they…

A 42-year-old convicted sex offender committed suicide in the San Luis Obispo County jail last week, hours before officials were to transport him to the Wasco State Prison for a 71-year prison term. Eugene Sloan, a Santa Maria resident, was convicted in 2004 of raping a 40-year-old Los Osos woman. It was his fourth sex…
Back to school
Diligent army recruiters are preparing, like students, for the school year. They’ve spent the summer contacting school officials, offering their help, and anticipating the first day of school. They’ve sharpened their pencils and polished their boots. “The goal is school ownership that can only lead to a greater number of Army enlistments,” states the U.S.…

The Shredder’s on a winning streak Shredder, much as it pains me, I have to compliment you on your “Naked truth” opinion piece (Aug. 18-25). You were right on. The vote by the Council majority that the nudity ordinance will only apply during Mardi Gras implies other ramifications you might wish to expose. You and…
Bamboo guru
Up a steep driveway that stems off of El Camino Real Road between Santa Margarita and Atascadero is a space of land with a unique ambiance. If you visit you might experience a subtle far-away feeling similar to the breezy carefree mood that the sound of Bossa Nova sets as you finish your last glass…
The ultimate solution for Los Osos
Every day we are faced with events that require our participation, that require a choice, that require us to be one way or the other. Every time that these occasions arise, we also are given the opportunity to change something about our response, our reaction, that will move us that much further along the path…

Corrections
The vehicle in which 23-year-old Marcel Groesbeck died Aug. 23 was a car and not an SUV, as reported in last week’s New Times. In last week’s news story “Owner of moving company charged with felony fraud,” the deputy district attorney was misidentified. The attorney’s correct name is Peter Von Dohlen.

Like sands through the hourglass
Of all the Central Coast cities to be throwing their weight around, the last two I’d expect to actually do so would be Guadalupe and Oceano. Guadalupe is too wrapped up in its incestuous political bickering to notice anything going on 30 feet outside of town. I’ll bet they couldn’t even get a city council…
Treefall before recall
A pair of excavators and about a dozen construction workers began bulldozing across the Tri-W proposed sewer site in Los Osos at 8:30 Tuesday morning, uprooting about 20 eucalyptus trees and clearing the way for the contentious middle-of-town wastewater treatment facility. With exactly four weeks remaining before the Sept. 27 CSD recall election, the event…
