People have been etching stone and carving forms from the earth since the dawn of civilization. The first sculptures were probably crafted in an effort to coax the hunting gods into supplying an easier meal. A lot has changed since then, but the underlying passion remains the same: molding structures out of nothing and hurling them into the world.
The California Sculpture SLAM running at SLOMA through Nov. 15 offers up current works by both established and emerging sculptors on the West Coast scene. Ranging from pedestal and freestanding to wall-mounted pieces, the 24 works in the exhibition were selected from 201 artists and include designs crafted of metal, wood, stone, glass, and fabric.Â
The selected artists come from all over the state. Representing the Central Coast are sculptors Isaac Lewin of San Luis Obispo, Patrick Mehaffy of Los Osos, Kevin Porter of Shell Beach, and Robert Schuerman of Paso Robles.
