Based on the 1985 Belgian novel and 2003 film De Zaak Alzheimer, this TV series follows Angelo Doyle (Patrick Dempsey), a contract killer trying to keep his family life separate from his life of crime while experiencing early signs of dementia. He often visits his brother, Michael (Richard Clarkin), who’s got Alzheimer’s disease and lives in a nursing home. His wife is dead, but he’s close with his pregnant daughter, Maria (Odeya Rush), and her husband, Jeff (Daniel David Stewart).

Angelo works for Dutch (Michael Imperioli), and while they appear friends on the surface, Dutch keeps tight control over his hired killer. Angelo’s “assistant” is Joe (Richard Harmon), Dutch’s nephew. As his memory fades, it puts Angelo’s separate lives on a collision course, and when Special Agent Linda Grant (Gina Torres) starts sniffing around, his life is further complicated.
It’s interesting to see McDreamy shed his typical role to play a morally ambiguous antihero with impressive life compartmentalization skills. Since it’s written to air on Fox, it’s not as gritty as its source material, and it drags on longer than necessary. Surprisingly, it’s been greenlit for another season, so expect this cow to keep getting milked. (10 41-to-43-min. episodes) ∆
