The Sacramento-based McClatchy Company is now officially the nation’s second-largest newspaper publisher. On June 27, it completed its acquisition of Knight Ridder, the San Luis Obispo Tribune’s parent company, McClatchy announced on June 27.

McClatchy, which boasts the Sacramento Bee as it premier paper, plans to sell 12 of its newly acquired papers to help cover Knight Ridder’s debts. The Tribune is the only paper in California that McClatchy plans to hang on to, because it is, apparently, the only one in a growing market.
