I would summarize Mr. Lukes’ recent opinion piece as “I have encountered a problem that I care about. But the problem is too big for me to solve all by myself. Why hasn’t someone else solved this problem?” (“How do I help an ailing animal?,” June 20).
While I don’t share his concern for dying squirrels, I recognize that I share his expectation that someone else will solve those really big problems that I can’t solve all by myself. (Problems such as global warming, overpopulation, the growing police state, obese children, starvation, racism, low voter turnout, people driving slowly in the passing lane, imported flowers, over-priced concert tickets, gophers, cucumber beetles, and overdrafted aquifers come to mind.)
I guess we could both learn something from Nelson Mandela: “Our great fear is not that we are powerless, but that we are powerful beyond measure.”
