Three years ago, we all witnessed a violent mob descend on the Capitol, costing people their lives, because one man—Donald Trump—spread lies about a “stolen” election.
The Jan. 6 insurrection was an attack on our democracy and our freedom to vote. Our nation came dangerously close to a coup orchestrated from within the Oval Office and the halls of Congress by President Trump and his allies.
But it didn’t end there. Trump and his allies are laying the groundwork for a second presidency even more extreme and authoritarian than the last.
Should he win the 2024 presidential election, Trump is already planning to pardon himself and his allies of crimes committed on Jan. 6, purge the federal government of officials who disagree with him, use the Department of Justice to exact political revenge, and even unleash the military on civilians exercising their First Amendment rights.
These threats are serious, and if Trump is able to claim power again, he will do everything he can to bring democracy to its knees, backed by MAGA allies in Congress, on the Supreme Court, and in state legislatures. Preserving our democracy takes work—and this year, we must all do our part. It’s up to all of us to ensure Trump and his allies do not return to power.

I find it astonishing that to many people are so narrow minded when it comes to the news they ingest. Yes, I watch Fox News, but I also read and watch articles from other outlets like the New York Times and CNN. I formed the opinion that we have a 2-level justice system and it’s not a stretch. We have the haves who can loot, burn down and destroy and have their bail raised by the current Vice President, then we have the have nots, everyday citizens many of whom never entered the Capitol building and are to this day sitting in jail awaiting trial for nonviolent and suspect charges. Then we have photos and video of election workers putting boards in front of glass blocking the view of election witnesses, vans pulling up to back doors in the middle of the night when counting has stopped dropping of mounds of ballots. We have a huge spike in votes for Biden, only in the swing states, that occurred after counting has supposedly stopped for the night. I can go on and on about the irregularities. The haves dismiss it and get there way and say these irregularities have been debunked. Debunked by who? The source of the debunking is a “have” themselves. Call it election interference when the former President talk about it.
The real election interference is charging the former President with weak and nearly unethical charges then drag him to a court clearly not fair or impartial. Again, the lies of mainstream media are taken by the left as gospel. Our vote this year is to save our democracy. Save it from the tyranny of the extreme left. The last 3 years have seen some of the worst corruption and good-ole-boy politics ever. No one believes Biden has the fortitude to lead today, nevertheless the next 5 years. 4 more years of the last 3 will be a disaster for our country and the world.
This writer’s 4th paragraph is proof of their closed-minded group think and how the extreme, violent left think. None of those things have been said. As far as a reckoning. I hope so, the country deserves a through elimination of the vermin who run it now.
That’s right, Ron. You’re a victim. All those folks who stormed the Capitol are victims. Trump is a victim. I mean, what chance have white folks ever had in this nation?
Well, you’re right Shanti Harris, my comments were quite flippant in response to Ron Scott. In my defense, I have been analyzing and refuting right-wing and MAGA propaganda on these pages for years. But, let me do it one more time. And then I’ll address your question of race.
First, Ron tells us he reads the New York Times and then goes on to repeat a litany of lies about the 2020 election. He must have missed headlines such as these in the Times: “The Times Called Officials in Every State: No Evidence of Voter Fraud” or “They Legitimized the Myth of a Stolen Election–and Reaped the Rewards” or “Michigan Republicans Debunk Voter Fraud Claims in Unsparing Report” or “‘I Wanted to Scream,’ Georgia Official Voices Exhaustion with Trump’s Baseless Fraud Claims.” In fact, 63 federal courts found that Trump’s claims of fraud were illegitimate. Not surprisingly, he is facing charges in Georgia regarding his attempts to overturn an election. And his chief partner in trying to steal the election in Georgia, Rudy Giuliani, has been held liable in defaming two election workers. Now if you believe the courts are biased against rich people like Trump and Giuliani, then nothing I can say will change your mind.
Second, Ron wants to claim that Trump is the victim of abuse by the legal system. Hogwash. Trump has been indicted by authorities (again, if you don’t trust our legal system, then nothing I say will change that) on over 90 felony counts regarding election tampering, inciting an insurrection and refusing to turn over highly sensitive government documents. These charges have been made in four different states. If it’s a conspiracy, then it’s awfully broad in its scope.
Third, Ron wants to project Trump’s corruption onto President Biden. In case you missed it, Trump spent four years enriching himself while supposedly running the nation. His companies reaped over $2 billion in profits. It is totally unprecedented for POTUS to continue to run his businesses and rake in such extreme profits. Every other president, and we’ve had several wealthy ones, have divested from their businesses. Not Trump. Moreover, Trump is currently in court facing over $300 million in penalties for lying to financial institutions about his wealth. He once claimed his 11,000 sq. ft. apartment in Trump Tower was 30,000 sq. ft. And he later valued the building itself at $530 million when appraisers had put the value at $260 million. Throughout his career Trump has cheated employees and dodged paying bills. Talk about corruption. I have never heard anything like that about Biden.
Fourth, Ron wants to claim the last four years have been a “disaster.” I beg to differ. When Biden assumed office, over 70,000 Americans were dying each month from COVID, the unemployment rate was 6.4% and the Dow Jones Industrial Average (a barometer that Trump often touted during his presidency) was at 30,000. Today, only a few thousand Americans are dying from COVID each month (still too high, mainly because many MAGA folks never got immunized), the unemployment rate is at 3.7% and the DJI is at 47,000. In addition, data from November, published in Fortune Magazine, shows that American wages have risen faster than inflation in the last year. Inflation has come way down during that time and now stands at slightly more than 3% (still too high, but improving). I could go on, including pointing out that Biden’s two signature pieces of legislation, the Bipartisan Infrastructure bill and the Inflation Reduction Act have produced solid results for middle and working class Americans with prescription drug prices going down and more Americans able to afford health care. Infrastructure projects have produced jobs across the nation. In fact, Republican politicians have taken credit for new bridges, roads, etc. in their districts despite having voted against the very money that is being used.
Finally, race. It is about race, Shanti. Trump made it about race years ago when he posted a full-page ad calling for the execution of the Central Park Five without knowing all the facts (they were later totally exonerated). He still hasn’t apologized to those men. He made it about race when he claimed that President Obama was not a U.S. citizen and badgered him about producing a birth certificate. Trump later had to admit he was wrong. He made it about race when he came down the escalator at Trump Tower in 2015 and claimed that “Mexicans are rapists…they’re not sending their best people.” He made it about race when he attempted to ban Muslims from entering the U.S.
Unfortunately, there is a large segment of white America, especially in the Midwest and rust belt, that believe in Trump, precisely because of those racist remarks. They feel they have been wronged over the last 60 years during the rise of the civil rights movement. Their factory jobs are gone (I suggest you read J.D. Vance’s book) and they now blame what they label “elites” or, in Ron’s terms, “haves.” They also blame the influx of immigrants for jobs lost. They feel they have been cheated and that somehow Trump can make it better by picking on minorities. As you say, it should be about class. Working class folks of all stripes should get together and demand a fairer playing field. We do need to move past race. But that isn’t going to happen with politicians like Trump running around spewing their garbage. I sincerely wish the Republicans would run a different candidate. Maybe we could move past this ugly time. All I know is that if I continue to read MAGA excrement in these pages, I will call it out.
Wow, I love your passion Shanti Harris.
I could debate you forever about the Clintons, but in the end you’re probably right. Clinton sold his soul to the neo-liberals when he signed NAFTA (designed by the Reagan and Bush administrations) and gutted welfare. He should have listened to California Senators Feinstein and Boxer who voted against it. They knew it was another step toward the “immiseration” of the working class you speak of.
No, the U.S. is not Weimar Germany. That’s ridiculous hyperbole.
Yes, neo-liberal economics have not worked. That’s clear. Right now, we’ve veered toward a Keynesian model and we need to give it another few years. Spending on work force (rising wages) and infrastructure worked in the 30’s when the U.S. was recovering from the Gilded Age (we’ve been living in a similar age for the last 40 years) and it could very well work now. I realize you see Biden as a doddering fool (I would argue Trump has been a doddering fool his entire life), but he understands history and what HASN’T worked. Give him another term. Let the Republican Party implode, because that’s where they’re headed if Trump doesn’t win.
And I love your links to Moore and Frank. Two of my favorite political commentators.
I might suggest a book for you: The Hidden History of Neo-Liberalism, by Thom Hartmann.
Quotes from Trump’s former AG, Staff & Cabinet’s members:
1. “He will always put his own interests and gratifying his own ego ahead of everything else including the country’s interest.” – Bill Barr former AG
2. The depths of his dishonesty is just astounding to me …. he is the most flawed person I have met in my life”. – John Kelly Ex Chief of Staff
3. “He is more dangerous than anyone could ever imagine” – James Mattis Secretary of Defense
4. “Trump has the impression that foreign leaders hold him in high regard…. They think he’s a laughing fool”. – John Bolton – National Secretary Adviser
These individuals are not left wing nut jobs or idiots or supporting the “have nots”. They’re all former members of his staff.
Is Biden a good choice? NO. But he won’t burn the house down.
Biden vs Trump in 2024. The only people that want either of those candidates on the ballot are far right and far left ideologues. Biden is too old and has diminished cognitive abilities. Trump is a compulsive liar, is too old, has too many indictments and has diminished cognitive abilities.
I’ll vote for Biden, aka, the lesser of two evils ☺️
Biden sold strategic oil reserves to China after his family profited from Chinese bribes and he WILl be impeached. Biden equals Neville Chamberlain and dwindling enlistment. Trump equals Churchill and patriotic enlistment gains. Who do you vote for to get us out of and to stay out of proxy wars?
Shanti Harris
Investment banks caused the Dubya great recession? Weird, over 80% of loans in 2006 were NON CONFORMING loans, created by mortage companies, NOT under most banking laws. BANKSTERS caused the Dubya recession, as Dubya gutted the FBI white collar criminal division by 2/3rds. You know those “self regulator” types?
BTW had plenty of bank failures thanks to Ronnie Reagan ignoring Mr Gray’s warnings that started in 1983, he was the regulator of the S&L’s
“It is not only conceivable, but in my view very possible, that at some point in the future, massive infusions from the U.S. Treasury–and hence the American taxpayers–may well be necessary to shore up the system,” Edwin J. Gray told a gathering of savings and loan executives in Washington in 1984.

What do you think Ronnie did?
Bill Clinton NAFTA? Oh right that thing thought up by Ronnie Reagan, negotiated by Poppy Bush and pushed through Congress by Bill, WITH 2/3RD OF THE DEMS VOTING AGAINST IT. Care to guess which side had over 90% of their side voting for it?
Hillary was correct in calling out the right wing!!! And if you REALLY believe the former guy and Hillary’s handling of documents were close to the same, perhaps read actual news?

U.S. Selling Oil from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve to the Highest Bidding Companies
A: The oil is sold to eligible companies that make the highest offers. Some of the companies are U.S. subsidiaries of foreign companies, and some that purchased oil have then exported a portion to buyers overseas. Exports increase the global supply and still help with U.S. gas prices, experts told us.
And since Congress lifted a nearly 40-year ban on most U.S. crude oil exports in 2015 (OBAMA MADE A DEAL WITH THE GOP) , the Department of Energy, which maintains the stockpile, cannot dictate whether companies can export oil purchased from the petroleum reserve, the department said in an email.
