It’s rare that a board resolution provokes a civic crisis of conscience. But when 3rd District Supervisor Dawn Ortiz-Legg cast the deciding vote to honor Mike Brown, a man widely known for lobbing misinformation and vitriol at the San Luis Obispo County Board of Supervisors, she didn’t just break with her more moderate colleagues. She broke trust with those of us who expect our elected leaders to champion truth and decency over bombast and bullying.
Ortiz-Legg’s justification? A devotion to “free speech.” It’s a noble-sounding rationale. But in this context, it’s either disingenuous or deeply misguided.
No one has ever tried to silence Mike Brown. In fact, few individuals have enjoyed as much unfiltered access to the board’s microphone, regardless of how inflammatory or inaccurate his comments may have been. Many times I saw Brown’s brand of political commentary: aggressive, divisive, and often wildly disconnected from the objective truth.
I’ve spent time reviewing Mr. Brown’s work over the years and read many of his newsletters. While he appears fairly versed in public policy, he consistently undercuts his message—and his personal credibility—with caustic personal attacks against perceived political adversaries, rooted in conspiracy theories and blatant misinformation. This isn’t courageous dissent. It is rhetorical vandalism.
Second District Supervisor Bruce Gibson captured it best: The resolution to commend Brown was a “sad day.” The vast majority of public input reflected this sentiment. Nearly 50 constituents objected to the resolution. That’s not an attack on speech. That’s democracy in action. When government honors someone, it signals to the public what values are worthy of celebration. In this case, the board majority lionized a man who represents the antithesis of civility, inclusiveness, and fact-based discourse.
Supervisor Ortiz-Legg said she voted with the conservatives on this issue because she wanted to show respect to all constituents. But civility is not a virtue when it’s used to shield demagoguery. A resolution isn’t a neutral gesture. It’s a statement of who we are and who we aspire to be.
With her vote, Supervisor Ortiz-Legg sets the bar low for recognizing civic participation. Based on what she said, does that mean anyone who consistently appears before the board to spew verifiable misinformation qualifies for a participation trophy? If so, we’ve lost sight of the difference between showing up and showing character.
In the end, Brown was not commended for being a thoughtful critic or a constructive watchdog. He was honored despite—or worse, because of—the very behavior that erodes the public’s trust in government.
That’s appeasement, not leadership. And our community deserves better. Δ

Excellent commentary. Dawn Ortiz-Legg’s vote to comment Mike Brown of COLAB made me ill, but did not surprise me. Her vote to comment Mike Brown was “appeasement, not leadership.”
It was good to see Sups Bruce Gibson and Jimmy Paulding vote to condemn Mr. Brown; but Ortiz-Legg voted with the fallacies and disinformation spread by the likes of Brown and the MAGA cult members.
Mike Brown has never worked to better the community. He has told false narratives about many angry white entitled alternative realities to divide people.
He has spread misinformation and falsehoods about made-up election fraud conspiracies and had his hand in that bogus Patton Map, that we the people sue about an got overturned.
He is not a good-faith actor, more of a dispenser of Russian propaganda. Mike Brown is a political hack, not a good member of the community, working for the common good.
Mike Brown seems to want to turn America into a Putin style dikkktatorship with Trump as the MAGA Orange Idol. The Dear Leader of those like Mike who suffer from White Male Entitlement syndrome, and love to hate anyone not like themselves. It is a sickness.
Mike Brown deserves no recognition for his false conspiracy theories and other partisan misinformation.

Good point, well made. No one tried to muzzle Mike Brown, and no one introduced a resolution to condemn him. But his behavior and lies should never have been rewarded with a sunny resolution. No, let this guy slouch off to retirement, along with his historical record of harassment, lawsuits (successful), religious bigotry and vitriol. You know what they say about screen doors….
