ON THE HUNT Journalist Scott Johnson traveled to Indonesia in search of a prolific and crafty con artist, in Hollywood Con Queen, streaming on Apple TV+. Credit: PHOTO COURTESY OF APPLE TV+

I listened to the podcast Chameleon: Hollywood Con Queen when it came out a few years ago, so when I saw the title flash across our “New on Apple TV” screen, I knew I wanted to watch it even if I knew the ins and outs. This docuseries interviews many victims of the person who defrauded hundreds of people, mostly in the entertainment business.

HOLLYWOOD CON QUEEN
What’s it rated? TV-MA
When? 2024
Where’s it showing? Apple TV+

Posing as women of power for the most part, the Queen lured targets to Indonesia with promises of a big project, fame, and a big payout. The only catch was veiled in something that happens in Hollywood all the time—you’ve got to pay up front and await reimbursement, but the victims never saw their money come back. What is truly shocking is how big of a ring one con artist was able to create and the many characters and names they were able to pull in.

This story’s been around for a bit, so true crime devotees are likely familiar. However, hearing from the victims as well as the journalist who finally exposed the truth makes for a compelling watch. If you’re unfamiliar with the tale, you’re in for a wild ride. (Three 44- to 60-min. episodes) ∆
