It’s impossible to buy John Alban’s cult wines unless you are fortunate enough to be on his exclusive mailing list. If you hope to join it, there’s an even larger wait list. However, this is one of his few wines you can still find in wine shops that’s reasonably priced for its quality. I was impressed by this particular vintage which has elegant fruit and honeyed flavors. That’s uncommon in a difficult vintage, but in the hands of a master it can be expected. Layered in aromas and flavors of stone fruits, the beautiful fruit melds with honey, citrus, and floral notes. As impressive alone as it is with food, it complements rich dishes such as spiced chicken, honey duck breasts, or smoked oysters. Available at Tastes of the Valleys Pismo Beach, it’s value-priced at $27 retail for one of the best viogniers in the state.
