Please accept the flowing lyrics as proof that Todd Snider is the funniest folkie in music today: āB-double E double R U-N beer run/ B-double E double R U-N beer run/ all we need is a ten and five-er,/ a car and key and a sober driver./ B-double E double R U-N beer run// A couple of frat guys from Abilene/ drove out all night to see Robert Earl Keen/ at the KPIG Swine and Sworea Dance./ They wore baseball caps and khaki pants./ They wanted cigarettes, so to save a little money they bought one off this hippie that smelled kinda funny./ And next thing they knew they were both pretty hungry and pretty thirsty too.ā
Second verse, different from the first: āThey found a store with a sign that said/ their beer was coldest./ So they sent in Brad ācause he looked the oldest./ He got a case of beer and a candy bar, walked over to where all the registers are/ laid his fake I.D. on the counter top./ The clerk looked, and turned to look back up and stopped./ He said āSon, I aināt gonna call the cops, but Iām gonna have to keep this cardā/ the guys both took it pretty hard.ā

Third verse, also different from the first: āThey met another old hippie named/ Sleepy John, claimed to be the one from the Robert Earl song./ So they gave him all their cashāhe bought āem some brews./ Was a beautiful day out in Santa Cruz/ They were feelinā so good it shoulda been a crime./ The crowd was cool, and the band was prime./ They made it back up front to their seats just in time so they could sing with all their friends āthe road goes on forever/ and the party never ends.āā
Not only is Todd Snider hilarious, whip smart, and endlessly entertaining, his music is also really infectiousāthe sort of songs you hear once and never get out of your head again. No wonder Rolling Stone magazine calls him āAmericaās sharpest musical storyteller.ā
Sniderās newest offering is Agnostic Hymns & Stoner Fables, a collection of songs about ālosers in the midst of losing.ā He notes in the albumās sardonic opener, āIn the Beginning,ā that āWe still need religion to keep the poor from killing the rich.ā Look out, one-percenters! Doom and gloom never sounded so hilarious. Of course, there are also some upbeat tracks, such as āBrenda,ā about Sniderās favorite couple ⦠Keith Richards and Mick Jagger!

āI admire that relationship a lot,ā Snider said in press materials. āWhat Mick and Keith have is real, and it canāt be touched and it canāt be beat. Iāve never met them, but I believe in the Rolling Stones. Thatās who I think about at Christmas, anymore. They opened their hearts and gave us so much. And they tried to be true to each other.ā
Snider plays SLO Brew on Tuesday, March 27. So buy some tickets, come to the show, and letās give Todd an Art Bash! welcome!
āWish I could show you how you hurt me in a way that wouldnāt hurt you, too,ā he sings.
Oh, weāll see about that!
