Slick your hair and wear your buckle shoes, fellow musical lovers, because Chicago is coming to town. Yes, all the sex, scandal, and fishnet tights of the Tony Award-winning show will be right here in San Luis Obispo at Cal Poly’s Performing Arts Center on Nov. 4 and 5.
If, somehow, you’ve been living in a cave, here’s the skinny on the story. It’s the mid-1920s, hot jazz and bountiful boozing are the cat’s meow, and it’s set in … well, you’ve seen the title of the show. We meet Roxie Hart, a housewife and wannabe star who winds up arrested for the murder of her sleazy lover. While awaiting her trial, she meets a colorful cast of characters, all varying in their degrees of villainy. There’s Velma Kelly, the cabaret starlet with a shady past; there’s Amos Hart, Roxie’s sweet, but sad husband; and, there’s Billy Flynn, the smooth criminal lawyer who turns scandals into spellbinding sensations. It’s a fun and deeply provocative show that wraps cynicism in sequins.
