The San Luis Obispo City Council approved a special election to see if some outlying residents want to be annexed into the city.
This is the second special election called by the City Council this year.
The vote was triggered by 22 protests to the Local Agency Formation Commission (LAFCO), filed by residents who don’t want to become part of the city. The protests were enough to force an election for the 54 registered voters who live on 231 acres of county land outside city limits on the southeast corner of SLO.
A majority vote of the residents would sink the city’s long held ambition to gobble up the pastoral neighborhood.
The vote will be conducted by mail at a cost of $2,000. The completed ballots are due Nov. 15.
