Sit right back and hear a tale

Storyteller Kirk Henning (pictured) has shared his stories with audiences at schools, libraries, bookstores, and festivals throughout California. Now is your chance to hear the tales he tells. The 11th annual summer season of "Stories 'Round the Fire" begins this Saturday at Cayucos Beach. Join Kirk and his wife Patty for an evening of stories, songs, and a marshmallow roast around the campfire. Bring a blanket, a jacket, and the whole fam-damily.

-- "Stories 'Round the Fire" is at 7 p.m. June 12, 26, July 3, 10, 24, 31, Aug. 14 & 21 south of the pier in Cayucos. Suggested donation is $3. Info: 995-2867.

This place is a zoo

Kids from the 34 local 4-H clubs in the county are showing their stuff this Saturday at the 4-H Field Day at the Mid-State Fairgrounds. The event features livestock shows with sheep, cows, goats, poultry, and rabbits. There will also be exhibits, demonstrations, a dog training show, a chicken barbecue fund-raiser, and tons more. The event is free, too, so there is no reason not to go. HHHHave fun.

-- 4-H Field Day begins at 8 a.m. June 12 at the Mid-State Fairgrounds in Paso Robles. Free. The chicken barbecue is 10:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Cost for the barbecue is $7. Info: 781-5943.

Celebration of the past

Remember days gone by at the annual Heritage Days celebration, "Discover the Rancho," this Saturday at the Dana Adobe in Nipomo. The event includes tours of the adobe, food, hands-on activities, old-time games, and more. The Orcutt Mineral Society will even offer panning for gold. Later in the evening, a campfire concert and dinner will feature a chicken barbecue dinner, a no host bar, raffles, and music by Dave Stamey, Dorian Michael (pictured), and Kenny Blackwell. All the day's events benefit the restoration and upkeep of the adobe.

-- 5th annual Rancho Nipomo Heritage Day is June 12, 10 a.m.-4 p.m., at the Historic Dana Adobe, 671 S. Oakglen Ave., Nipomo. Cost is $3. A "Campfire Concert and Dinner" is 5-10 p.m. Tickets are $30. Info: 929-5679.
