Green gala gets going

Imagine running a car on vegetable oil. Sound farfetched? Not anymore. By the end of the summer Jason Hoar will open the first bio-diesel pump station in San Luis Obispo.

Hoar is just one of the entrepreneurs sharing his ideas at San Luis Obispo’s first Green Earth Festival. This event is the brainchild of Lucinda Nichols, founder of GreenEarth Promotions. She hopes the festival will “promote people and ideas that are striving towards a sustainable future and give recognition to all the incredible people in our community who are doing great work.”

Nichols cited Hoar as just one of the people in the community who are making a difference: “There are a lot of entrepreneurs in the community who are operating thriving green businesses in our county — some are Cal Poly students. It is creating a whole new economy.”

Scheduled from 11 a.m.-8 p.m. June 5 at the San Luis Obispo Vets Hall, the event features speakers, booths, dancing, food, music, and workshops. Workshop topics include lobbying the government, using sustainable energy in the county, turning a backyard into a “food forest,” and solar and strawbale building demonstrations. Additionally, health practitioners will provide massage and stress management.

Green Goods will exhibit home improvement supplies, Guayaki will serve Yerba Mate lattes, and Agrifuels will explain bio-diesel, a clean fuel for cars. UrbanBikePacker.com and Pacific Electric Cycles will have cycles to test-drive. Renewable Energy Concepts will provide the solar electricity for the event.

In the evening, Kevin Danaher, co-founder of Co-Op America, Global Exchange, and the Green Festivals, will speak. His ideas present “great simple solutions that we can all do that make a big difference,” said Nichols. After Danaher’s speech, the event ends with a dance.

For more information on renting a booth, performing, giving a speech, facilitating a workshop, or volunteering for this event, contact Lucinda Nichols at [email protected] or 528-7985.
