Yoga in the city

Yoga in downtown San Luis Obispo is back. And coincidentally, it's returned to the very same space the city's first yoga studio opened in many years ago.

Nikki Taylor, the owner of Yoga Downtown, ran a yoga studio in the Four Corners area of Colorado for the past five years. She recently moved here to, as she put it, "broaden my teaching horizons."

She's hooked up with Peter Sterios - a longtime local yoga instructor and previous contributing Yoga Journal editor - and together, they'll teach classes for all levels of practitioners seven days a week, every morning and most evenings.

In an interesting twist on the traditional business model, Yoga Downtown is asking for its class fees on a donation basis. Taylor said that many people can't afford the high cost at some yoga studios and she "totally trust[s] their integrity" to donate what they can.

The idea, she said, is based on the theory of the universal law of exchange.

"It's kind of a circle," she explained. "You give; you receive. And it walks hand in hand with the philosophy behind yoga."

Yoga Downtown is located at 967 Monterey St., upstairs from where GiGi's restaurant used to be. Contact them at 546-9642 or visit www.yogadowntown.com.
