WOne Safe Baby

Los Osos entrepreneur Cristi Spahr recently co-founded Safe Start Babyproofing-a child safety consulting service she hopes will help parents, grandparents, and other caregivers create safer homes. Spahr offers room-by-room safety assessments, private first aid and CPR training, a selection of safety-related products, and professional product installation.

Spahr is a new mom herself and when her son Carson started crawling, she found herself chasing him around the house, trying to head him away from dangerous situations. After creating "safe areas" for Carson to play in, Spahr realized that other caregivers could benefit from that same knowledge.

"Kids hear the word 'no' way more than the word 'yes,'" she said. "It's nice to be able to say 'go for it' instead of 'no, no, no' all the time."

A certified Red Cross infant/child CPR and first aid instructor, Spahr also offers private training that teaches adults how to handle breathing and cardiac emergencies, injuries, poisoning, burns, and related injuries involving their children. Safe Start is also a member of the International Association for Child Safety and the National Safety Council.

FAST FACTS

Dr. Steve Norby and Mary Ann Shires Montgomery will be in Morro Bay on April 4 to sign copies of their book, "Coffee on 2nd Street: The true story of a man's life and his victorious battle with Alzheimer's." The book follows Norby and his wife's struggles and it's not only, as Norby puts it, about Alzheimer's: "It's about a man who . was mentally and emotionally able to conquer the disease, at least for the single patient in the world he cared about the most-his beloved wife." The authors will be at Coalesce Bookstore, 845 Main St., Morro Bay, from 1-3 p.m. For info, call 772-2880. .

. Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in women, but a new computer-aided detection system has been designed to minimize false-negative readings during mammogram screenings. Radiology Diagnostic Center is the first facility on the Central Coast with an ImageChecker CAD-a system that can potentially detect up to 23.4 percent of cancers earlier than other types of mammography. Call the center at 440-0030 for more information. .

. The final day to bid on Goodwill's collection of Goofy memorabilia is fast approaching. If you haven't heard the news, an anonymous donor gave the San Luis Obispo branch of Goodwill Industries more than 100 Goofy-related items, ranging from clothing to glassware to trinkets and telephones. The donor began accumulating the Disney-themed items more than 20 years ago and estimates that the collection is now worth more than $2,000. A silent auction began in early March and will conclude at the Paso Robles Goodwill store at 4 p.m. on April 4. If the bidding is still active by the 4 p.m. deadline, a live auction will take place. Call the San Luis Goodwill at 544-0542 for more information. .

. On April 3 from 10 a.m.-7 p.m., the doors of San Luis' Kevin Main Jewelry, 720 Higuera St., will be open to dogs and diamonds alike for "Diamonds in the Ruff: A Purrfectly Fabulous Open House." All profits for the day will be donated to The Woods Humane Society's new animal shelter. A selection of specially priced "Runt of the Litter" jewelry will be on sale and drawings will be held for 14k gold pet tags and rhinestone pet collars. For more information, call 547-0662. ³
