Zocker Paragon Vineyard's 2014 Gruner Veltliner and Brecon Estate Winery's 2013 Grenache

Brisk weather calls for hot German food—Beda’s Biergarten’s hot German food, to be exact. German food calls for a cold German beer, or, as I found recently, a cold balanced white wine with lots of acidity. Primarily grown in Austria, Slovakia, and the Czech Republic, grüner veltliner is known for its exotic, tropical fruit flavors and earthy notes of fresh veggies. Rich and round, this refreshing, zesty white did not disappoint (the 2014 vintage offers up a tantalizing mix of white pepper and ripe melon). So, bring on the fatty goodness, I say! Zocker’s grüner veltliner (made by Edna Valley mainstay Baileyana Winery) cuts through comfort food like a knife through bratwurst.

Zocker Paragon Vineyard’s 2014 Grüner Veltliner—$20 a bottle; 582 Orcutt Road, Edna Valley; purchase by the glass at Beda’s Biergarten, 3230 Broad St., SLO.

Holy yum, Batman! Keep this wine away from me. Seriously. With its luxuriously soft tannins, light-yet-complex fruity flavor, subtle spice, and smooth finish, I could drink it till the cows come home. If this wine were a T.V. show it would be a weeklong marathon of I Love Lucy (the original binge-watching experience). Brecon Estate Winery is all about coaxing the best flavors from the land, and it certainly shows here in this lovable, charming red born from Paso’s famed Adelaida District. Unfortunately, the 2013 grenache is sold out at the winery, but you can still purchase it by the glass on the finest local wine lists. I guess that’s a good thing, as I obviously can’t handle more than one precious glass at a time.

Brecon Estate Winery’s 2013 Grenache—About $8 a glass at Upper Crust Trattoria; SLO 11560 Los Osos Valley Road, SLO.
