Who's really the villain in health-care cuts?

Los Osos

I want to protest the cheap shot Mr. Hodin took at Jeff Hamm, the Health Agency director (June 16). The cartoon implies that Mr. Hamm is indifferent to cuts to health-care services to the poor, as if he, Mr. Hamm, decided how much money would be allocated to health services.

The fact is that Mr. Hamm is told how much money he will have for annual costs, and he is told what services are required by statute. I am sure that he would be pleased to be given sufficient funds to provide adequate care for all in need.

Now if the public would just cough up $10 or $15 dollars each per year, we could have care for all in need. So just who is the villain here—whiny taxpayers, pandering politicians, or a bureaucrat doing what he must?

Oh, and the reference to his salary is truly a cheap shot. If he were in the private sector with his level of responsibility, he’d have a significantly higher salary, I would bet.
