What's in a name? 

If you’ve paid a visit to Kreuzburg recently, you’ve probably noticed a menu theme: authors. If you’re in the mood for some hummus, pepperjack, and veggies, the Thoreau sandwich will probably catch your eye. If you happen to be craving fried chicken breast with a “tangy slaw,” the Samuel Clemens is your best bet.

So how did it come to pass that Kreuzburg’s menu would pay homage to brilliant, dead, and depressive authors? According to a couple of baristas on duty, it was mostly the work of the general manager.

The menu is impressive and includes well-known authors like John Steinbeck and lesser known authors (to some) like Charles Bukowski. The menu certainly has the ability to separate the lit majors from the Danielle Steele fans, but it’s also a great conversation piece. 

“Customers will come in and try to guess which authors are dead and which are alive. Sometimes the names are lost on people, but a lot of people like trying to figure out who is who, and they do that with the wall portraits, too,” employee Mitch Shira explained.

Shira said most of the names are just for fun and don’t necessarily share a deep connection to the food itself.  But the F. Scott Fitzgerald sandwich, which deliciously combines pear slices with goat cheese and grilled chicken, is an apt tribute to a man who led a flavorful—if not extremely conflicted—life.

Had Fitzgerald known he would one day be memorialized with such a delicious sandwich, he might have made better life choices and stuck around a little longer.

Whether you order the food for the author or for your palate, be sure to pair it with one of Kreuzberg’s delicious beers on tap. The light and tasty Kreuzberg Blonde goes great with the Fitzgerald.

While waiting for your food, take a look at the menu and see which member of your party can name the most works by any of the authors. ∆
