Senator Tom Coburn of Oklahoma recently put a hold on S-1963, the Veterans’ Caregiver and Omnibus Health Benefits Act of 2009, which prevented the bill from being considered by the Senate. His “reasoning?” He didn’t know how it would be paid for! He had before that put holds on two earlier Veterans Health Care benefits bills, S-252 and S-728, which then were combined into S-1963 in an effort to get around his holds. To prove what a hypocrite he is, he twice had voted for billions of dollars to fund the Iraq and Afghanistan wars.
It’s hard to imagine that even a hardcore Republican would be so callous as to deny benefits to the very soldiers he wants to send off to war. Let’s hope the good people of Oklahoma remember this when he stands for re-election next time.
