We need a ballot initiative to fix health care

Paso Robles

Our private health-care system is failing. Soon, only the rich will be able to afford the premiums.

Obamacare will not change this.

The only other potential legislation that I hear about in California is a government-run, no-responsibility-for-your-own-health, single payer system. Although such systems work fairly well in Canada, Australia, and Japan, the World Health Organization reports that these cultures are much healthier than the United States, which is only 72 on its list of healthiest countries. Unless our citizens overall adopt healthier diets and lifestyles, I find the idea that California, with 12 percent and higher unemployment, with its government and much of its population in or near bankruptcy, can afford to give every citizen, including every overweight, exerciseless person, every chemical/pesticide-laden/GMO/overprocessed junk food eater, drug user, smoker, soda pop and alcohol drinker, pharmaceutical junkie, reckless, drunk or distracted driver, criminal, and illegal alien free and unlimited health care to be a fantasy. This is especially true if the program is infested with as much waste and fraud as the Medicare program is.

Still, something needs to be done. I doubt that the dysfunctional government in Sacramento can produce anything useful. We will need a ballot initiative that addresses the real causes with real solutions.
