We can end
sexual assault

RISE would like to thank Rhys Heyden for his article “Winter of discontent: There’ve been three reported sexual assaults in three months at Cal Poly. Now what?” (Jan. 29). The article focused appropriately on the need for public participation and awareness in order to change a culture that allows one in four women in college to be sexually assaulted.

I wanted to clarify the statement that “there’s always been a lot of rape at Cal Poly.” Sexual assaults have always been a problem on college campuses, including Cal Poly. This is also true in the community at large.

The difference today is that victims are feeling safer to report them. For this, we thank Cal Poly and the strides they have made to change the culture and support victims of sexual assault. RISE looks forward to supporting further changes both on campus and in the community and invites the community to RISE up against sexual assault because together we can end sexual assault in our community. For more information on how to get involved, visit RISEslo.org.
