We aim to unite, not divide

On behalf of the Gay and Lesbian Alliance of the Central Coast (GALA), I would like to respond to a letter to the editor (“Gays’ reverse discrimation is shameful, Feb. 24-March 3) that expressed concern about GALA’s openness and inclusiveness.

Most people care about equal treatment and respect for themselves and for their friends and relations. We’re all human. This is basically what Mr. Spielman, the letter’s author, and I concluded after a brief but pleasant phone conversation.

The willingness to communicate in an honest, positive manner builds strength for every one of us. It creates and promotes understanding. In these times in our country we must continue to dialogue with one another.

To have a healthy gay/lesbian/bisexual/ transgender (GLBT) community that is respected, embraced by, and of value to the broader Central Coast community — this
is the vision of GALA. Through education, support, recreation, advocacy, and partnerships, we promote the well being of our GLBT community.

We make our contributions as Republicans, Democrats, and other political parties. We come from all cultural and ethnic backgrounds, faiths, and religions. We are nurses, teachers, ministers, social workers, lawyers, soldiers, parents, grandparents. We are part of the whole. We endeavor to bring people together. Two of our board members are straight allies. We invite you to visit our web site at
