Warm and fuzzy

Schöne Ferien! Beda’s Biergarten in SLO will host a festive evening in celebration of St. Nikolaus Day this Dec. 6 at 5 p.m. Enjoy Gluhwein (German mulled wine), hot chocolate, Stollen (German fruit bread topped with powdered sugar), and more. Kids are encouraged to bring a spare shoe, which will be filled with a special holiday treats while adults munch on a complimentary piece of that aforementioned Stollen. In case you didn’t know, St. Nikolaus is the inspiration for the modern Santa, and he’s all about filling kids’ shoes with trinkets! And if that wasn’t enough heart-warming spirit for your whole family to savor, there will also be a caroling quartet singing up a storm (funds go toward the Central Coast Gilbert and Sullivan Group; for all the details go to bedasbiergarten.com). Stay cozy out there, folks!

Slurping season

Swell swill: The SLO Holiday Beer and Wine Festival is giving us all another excuse to drink this holiday season! It’s all going down this Dec. 17 in a blaze of holiday cheer and lots and lots of beer, beer, beer. Tickets include tasting glass, beer and wine samples, food samples, treats, auction, and a chance to win cash prizes for best ugly sweater and holiday outfit (plan on getting a designated driver or ride your bike, if you think you can handle it. Bike SLO County will be parking bikes for free; for tickets go to santasbeer.com) … Want to impress ’em at your next holiday party? Bring a bottle of lagrein from Pelletiere Estate winery, one of the only producers in the area offering up this dark, full-bodied Italian varietal. With a light and luxurious mouth feel to balance out the depth, and a very limited case production, you can bet everyone will feel ultra festive sipping it (3280 Township Road, Paso Robles; pelletiere.com).

Cool beans

SLOtown pride! For the first time ever, Visit San Luis Obispo County will be hosting Visit California’s Global Ready China Seminar in San Luis Obispo County. Visit California’s Global Ready China Seminar—presented in partnership with Visit San Luis Obispo County and UnionPay International—provides an in-depth look at the growing and dynamic Chinese market and how businesses large and small can tap into it … Italian mainstay Guiseppe’s Cucina Rustica has opened its newest location at the historic Sinsheimer Bros. building on Monterey Street in SLO with plenty of places to nosh on fine Italian grub. Grab a slice of pizza to go from the deli counter, cozy up to house made pasta in a booth, eat seared yellowfin tuna in the twinkle-light strewn courtyard, or go for a truly quiet nosh in the garden room out back (849 Monterey St.; giuseppesrestaurant.com).

Hayley Thomas Cain is stuffed and happy. She can be reached at hthomas@newtimesslo.com.
