Violence in downtown SLO is no mystery

San Luis Obispo

Regarding Colin Rigley’s article “Big trouble in little SLO” (Nov. 26), which addressed the spike in violent assaults downtown: What does he mean “No one has answers?”, “there’s no explanation?”, “it’s kind of weird?” “Blip?” Come on, my daughter lives upstairs across the street where the 15-year-old girl was struck and we were out walking in the area when it happened. It was Farmers Market, with plenty of drunks on the street. When you live on Broad and Higuera you get an upfront and personal look at how prevalent public intoxication is in downtown SLO, especially on Thursday nights. A young man left unconscious as the bars were letting out? Hmmm ... Please, denial must not be the sole domain of the alcoholics in SLO these days. The parking lot behind Mothers Tavern is seriously unsafe, but let’s get real about the underlying impetus for the violence. Drinking is to be monitored  first by the people who profit from alcohol sales. Anyone who has an ABC license and serves drunks jeopardizes their business. Perhaps the community needs to contact ABC in mass.
