Use your head, Mayor Dave

Well, it’s nice to see the mayor will stand up for what he believes in (Commentary, Feb. 17-24). On Mayor Romero’s watch, one of SLO’s best and favorite traditions was killed, at a reported cost of $500,000. He is proud to tell us he was skiing while the execution was underway.

I suppose he was right to leave town: Who wants to be in SLO when martial law is underway in the streets?

For the future, here’s my suggestion: Instead of calling up Chico and Palm Springs (really — what was the mayor thinking?) — why not call up San Francisco and see how much they would charge to come down and provide some tips in functional event planning and policing? The mayor can say he wants people who come out for Mardi Gras to be free to have fun in their own way, he doesn’t want arrests or checkpoints or hidden cameras, he doesn’t want a riot, and he doesn’t want property damage or injuries. Believe it or not, those all go hand in hand. I bet San Francisco won’t charge $500,000 to show SLO how to make it all happen.

Then perhaps next year Mayor Dave can write a commentary telling us how proud he was to have hosted a great party and revived a great tradition. Wouldn’t that be something?
