Todd Fisher, Owner

Imagination Shoppe

NEW TIMES: What is the Imagination Shoppe?
FISHER: We are a game café. We were born to our Internet café mother and our game store father. We provide a friendly environment for anyone who enjoys playing games. Be it board games, card games, or electronic gaming, we cover all the aspects for newcomers and veterans alike. More than just games, we have a wonderful and creative coffee bar with all the trimmings.

NEW TIMES: How did the Imagination Shoppe start?
FISHER: All of the owners who helped build Imagination Shoppe are advent gamers. Most of us started gaming since grade school around the late ’70s, and we’ve been going strong since then. I’d worked as a corporate manager and as a state employee so entrepreneurship was the next adventure for me. We wanted to try something different and started a business we would love. I’m a hobbyist cook, so naturally I thought about throwing the coffee into the mix.

What kind of events take place at Imagination Shoppe?
FISHER: Anything related to gaming. We host leagues, competitions, showcases, prereleases, and tournaments. If we don’t have it, people suggest it and we run it. Digitally, we have run Halo 3 tournaments, Mario Kart tournaments, and Starcraft tournaments. We’ve also done showcases for Borderlands, Aion, and Left 4 Dead 2. On the unpowered gaming venue, we run Magic the Gathering tournaments often, host a Pokémon League every Sunday, and miniature gaming every Friday. Recently we had a very successful showcase for the new Warhammer Fantasy Role-Playing Game, and coming in January is a prerelease event for the new expansion, Worldwake, for Magic the Gathering. As you can tell, we love to run gaming events!

NEW TIMES: What about a relaxing cup of Joe?
FISHER: Coffee is one of the great creative outlets for our employees. We have employees who are culinary experts as well as our regulars who suggest and try out different combinations of flavors. Some of our creations include: root beer float-frappe, Oreo cookie blended frappe, the cinnamon bun latte, and the penguin! We’re like a coffee shop on steroids! Also, we pride ourselves for using such local suppliers as fair-trade JoeBella for our coffee, and Edna’s Bakery for our delicious treats.
