Nuremberg. The 16th century. This is the setting of Die Meistersinger von Nünberg—Richard Wagner’s opera that can be seen as part of the Metropolitan Opera’s live transmissions series at Cal Poly’s Performing Arts Center on Jan. 11.
Die Meistersinger von Nünberg tells the story of one lonely arts editor’s struggle to find the umlaut command on her keyboard. No. That’s not true. That would be a tragic opera, and this is one of Wagner’s rare comedic operas. It follows a guild of creative craftsmen—poets and musicians—dubbed the “Meistersinger” (Master Singers) who live in Renaissance-era Nuremberg. Wagner based his opera on the real-life existence of such guilds and the story features many of their historical traditions in addition to a wide range of musical styles that run the gamut from arias to ballet. This is a unique opportunity to not only see one of Wagner’s classic masterpieces, but to also experience the world-class production of New York’s famous Metropolitan Opera without having to travel too far from home.
