Terrorism and patriotism have been discussed a lot lately. The actions and thinking of the Tucson shooter have focused much attention on these words. A clear line of understanding does not exist to define the personal actions of any individual as it pertains to their beliefs and what they do in support of their beliefs. Although every terrorist is a patriot in his own group, his acts of violence serve only that group. It is clear that those who learn to hate will react in fear.
In this world of globalization, to be of a limited view does not serve the greater good, and acts of violence serve only to separate. The old Star Trek’s Mr. Spock says it well: “The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few.” When will we realize that we are all one, and the “many” really is the one?
To have 7 billion separate beliefs on this planet can only make for a meaningless world. The thoughts that led to the Tucson shooter’s actions were only real to him. The only meaningful question to be asked now is: Where did those beliefs come from? The old saying—“garbage in; garbage out”—comes to mind as it pertains to what this man got for programming as he grew up. All the beliefs of this world are in competition with each other and until we have the common belief that we are one, fear will prevail.
