There's a lot going on when it comes to health in San Luis Obispo County. You know that. You're out there on the streets getting fit every day, running, exercising, eating well. But what's that you say? You don't have time to read even a medium-length story about some health-related issue?
Say no more. To help people like you--people committed to burning fat and building muscle and staving off diseases and ailments of all kinds--New Times staffers crunched down some health news into bite-sized chunks you can digest along with your low-carb diet, or high-carb diet, or whatever diet you're on.
Take a jog on the nearest treadmill and read a health brief or two. After all, your brain needs as much of a workout as the rest of you.
Cancer center gets a financial boost
Arroyo Grande Community Hospital's proposed Coastal Cancer and Diagnostic Center received a $10,000 donation from Rabobank this month. This is one of many showings of support the center has received since its plans were released last year. So far, nearly a million dollars have been raised locally for the center, two thirds of the Arroyo Grande Community Hospital Foundation's financial goal.
When completed, the center will be fully equipped to care for local cancer patients and their families through a variety of approaches. For more information, contact Montisa Phelan Lopez at 994-5421.
Protect your children from injury
The San Luis Obispo Police and Fire departments will be host to child-seat checkups on Feb. 13. From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., representatives of both departments will join members of the California Highway Patrol and the San Luis Obispo Car Seat Coalition to inspect and--if necessary--properly install child car seats.
This event will coincide with National Child Passenger Safety Week. The checkup is free and open to anyone, but will be canceled if the weather doesn't cooperate.

Lend support through Hospice
Hospice Partners of the Central Coast is looking for volunteers.
A 20-hour volunteer training program begins Feb. 20 and continues every Wednesday for four weeks
to end on March 19. The trainings run from 1 to 5 p.m. at United Methodist Church in San Luis Obispo.
Hospice in-home volunteers give support and companionship to Hospice patients and their families. The group also needs volunteers to go through minimal training for office assistance, mailings, and fundraising events.
Hospice Partners of the Central Coast offers in-home programs that include providing terminally ill individuals with visits from nurses, social workers, spiritual counselors, home health aides, dietitians, volunteers, musicians, and grief and bereavement counselors. The group's stated goal is to provide emotional and spiritual support, freedom from pain, and the ability to control direction of care.
For more information, call the volunteer coordinators at 782-8617, Ext. 152, or 782-8608.
French Hospital funds healthy teeth
Alan Iftinuik, president of French Hospital Medical Center, recently presented Barbara Nicholson, executive director of Partnership for the Children of San Luis Obispo County, with a $6,000 check. The funds, given on behalf of the Catholic Healthcare West Community Grants Program, will be used to provide dental treatment requiring the use of IV sedation or general anesthesia.
Partnership for the Children operates a nonprofit children's dental treatment center in Paso Robles, known as La Clinica de Tolosa.
The grants program seeks to partner with nonprofit groups working to improve the health status and quality of life in communities they serve. La Clinica de Tolosa was one of nine programs selected for funding out of 12 local applicants.
