Support revitalization

Atascadero

One of the biggest reasons to support the Atascadero Shield Initiative/Measure D-08 is to ensure the continued development of our downtown. As Stacy Mitchell says in her book, Big Box Swindle: “Downtown revitalization doesn’t just take place downtown; it takes a broader community-planned effort. [Planned is the key word here.] You can’t say you want to have a healthy downtown and still zone all the land for more retail on the outskirts. Downtown revitalization initiatives have the best chance of success if they are backed by a strong land-use plan that limits retail sprawl. While some downtowns can get by serving the whims of tourists and affluent shoppers, truly vibrant community centers need a viable local economic base that meets a substantial and broad array of residents’ needs.”

Measure D-08 supporters favor developing the 10-acre Del Rio commercial area to a size that fits and benefits the neighborhood and city at large.

Any superstore at the Del Rio overpass would draw an additional 8,000 car trips a day. It doesn’t fit! Consider the resulting smog, and the noise of traffic and trucks making deliveries 24 hours a day. The alternative is to vote “Yes” on Measure D-08. Go to saveatascadero.com for more information.
