Stop littering, Lions

Fresno and Cayucos

I am writing to share an interesting and ironic experience that my husband and I had in Cayucos on Friday, May 1. As we often do, we went to a cafe down near the pier to have an early dinner. When we got there and were seated at windows looking out at the pier and Veterans’ Hall, we discovered that there was some type of regional meeting of the Lions Club at the hall. It appeared to be a fairly large convocation of Lions and Lionesses. One of the Cayucos community improvement projects that the Lions were a part of a few years ago was the “Butt in” program, which installed a form of ashtray/receptacle in the shape of a large cigarette prominently throughout the town, including one about ten feet from the front door of the Veterans’ Hall. My husband and I watched in amazement while during the one and one half hours we were eating we counted several cigarette smoking Lions and Lionesses throw at least twenty cigarette butts into the street and onto the sidewalk. One even landed right in front of the Butt in receptacle.

As a matter of fact, during our dinner we never observed one Lion or Lioness ever use the Butt in. Now, I’m not anti-smoker and have no hidden agenda here—I smoked for years. But come on, Lions, at least use the receptacles you helped install. No wonder smokers are given such a hard time about their addiction: Lots of them are litterbugs!
