Some quiche with that coffee?

The juncture of Halcyon Road and Highway 1 is a surprisingly peaceful place, overlooking Arroyo Grande and surrounded by vast agricultural fields. The location lends itself to a business specializing in spoiling customers with a hot cup of coffee or a glass of wine and some quiche. Mesa Cafe and Coffee Co. is not a bustling, impatient cafe. Instead, the three-month-old business is geared toward hospitality and comfort.

# "Our goal is to spoil anybody and everybody who walks through our doors, to anticipate our guests' needs," said Manager Ceci Timmermans. "Our focus is to be a real cafe, as opposed to a coffee shop."

In addition to your standard lattes and pastries, Mesa Cafe serves wine, beer, tea, quiche, and salads. Timmermans has been involved in the local wine industry for about 20 years, and her goal is to rotate a small list of hard-to-find wines, continually offering customers something new.

The cafe also boasts plenty of space to sit and relax, with a small outdoor courtyard, a half dozen small tables inside, and a lounge area with large chairs situated around a table. On one wall, a mural painted by Glenda Stevens and Marcie Gooley in 2003 contributes to the quiet atmosphere, and rafters strung with lights bring a sense of life to the cafe.

In addition to customers traveling through California along Highway 1, Timmermans wants locals to feel comfortable dropping by for a cup of coffee, glass of wine, or plate of quiche. It may not be the same morning ritual without waiting in a long line of grumpy customers, talking to an even less friendly barista, and wishing for some food with actual substance to eat with your coffee, but Mesa Cafe and Coffee Co. isn't supposed to be like other cafes.

Mesa Cafe and Coffee Co. is located at 2808 S. Halcyon Road in Arroyo Grande and is open from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., Sunday through Wednesday, and 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday through Saturday. For more information, call 481-3900.
