SLOGEA split decision looms

The 179 members of the San Luis Obispo County Trades, Crafts, and Services units will vote on Sept. 13 whether to split from the county’s largest employee union: the San Luis Obispo County Employees’ Association (SLOCEA).

Members of the recently formed SLO General Employee Association (SLOGEA) were given permission to conduct the election after SLO County supervisors determined on July 15 that the new group acquired the necessary signatures from 40 percent of the proposed membership.

If 50 percent of the SLOGEA members approve the split, they will form a new bargaining unit separate from the 1,431 members of SLOCEA.

Ballots will be counted on Oct. 4, and the results should be announced soon after.

“SLOCEA-represented employees have become increasingly displeased with their union and are seeking other options for representation,” SLOGEA said in a news release.
