SLO prepares for a run

The San Luis Obispo Police Department is urging residents to exercise patience and to drive carefully on April 22 when several major streets will be closed for the first ever SLO Marathon, a fundraiser for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

The on and off ramps at Highway 101 and Marsh Street will be closed from 4 a.m. to 3 p.m., but the commercial area of downtown will only be affected from 5 to 7:30 a.m. Any parked cars will need to be moved beforehand.

The 26-mile trek begins at 6 a.m., when thousands of runners will embark from SLO High School, surge through downtown, loop from Johnson Avenue to Orcutt Road, return downtown via the railroad safety trail, and finish at Madonna Inn, where a SLO Life Expo, concert, and barbecue will be held. Dozens of law enforcement officers and medical personnel will be posted along the course to keep runners safe from traffic and injury.
