SLO mayor says: Give the council the tools it needs

San Luis Obispo

The City of San Luis Obispo’s Measures A and B are not partisan issues. Democrats, Republicans, Libertarians, Greens, Independents, and Decline to State come down on both sides of these issues.

What, then, seems to be the decisive factor? Those loyal to public safety unions (or wishing to curry their favor) generally oppose the measures. This is unsurprising. After all, it is the job of unions to protect their members’ pocketbooks and promote continual wage and benefit increases. Binding arbitration and current pension provisions have been enormously effective in that regard. It is the job of city council, on the other hand, to protect and promote the well being of all city residents, the environment, the economy, and the infrastructure when balancing the budget.

Measures A & B will give council tools to rein in spiraling overhead costs and allow the city to hire more public safety officers. Passing the measures may not benefit certain individuals financially, but will increase the short- and long-term financial health of the city as a whole. Give council the tools it needs to do its job—vote yes on Measures A & B.
