SLO Little Theatre stages 'The Secret Garden'

There is an endless amount of children’s books in this day and age, but there are very few that can be considered classics. I mean, there are the ones you enjoy as a kid—Winnie the Pooh, Everybody Poops, Anna Karenina. Then, there are the ones that you carry into your adulthood. Frances Hodgson Burnett’s The Secret Garden is one of those stories, and one you can soon see on stage at the SLO Little Theatre.

Written around the turn of the 20th century, Burnett’s story follows 10-year-old Mary Lennox—a sickly young girl who is sent to live at her uncle’s English country manor after her parents perish in a cholera epidemic. While at the manor, she discovers an elaborate, walled garden filled with lush sights and bountiful surprises. There, she forms friendships with Martha, the manor’s maid servant; Martha’s brother Dickon; Colin, a young boy in a wheelchair; and a red-breasted robin. Together, the group discovers there may be more to this garden than the smell of the roses.

The Secret Garden plays at the SLO Little Theatre Jan. 9 through 25, on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Tickets are $13 with a student ID and $20 for general admission. For more information, visit slolittletheatre.org or call 786-2440.
