SLO Little Theatre stages one-woman show, 'The Search for Signs of Intelligent Life in the Universe'

In the hustle and bustle of Times Square, you’re likely to find someone like Trudy, a bag lady who does what many a Times Square eccentric does—shout about aliens. But Trudy’s deeper than this. She may be crazy, but as she wisely admits, “Going crazy could be just the evolutionary experience trying to hurry up mind expansion.” You see, Trudy is just one of the strange and sublime characters featured in Jane Wagner’s Tony Award-winning, one-woman show, The Search For Signs of Intelligent Life in the Universe, which you can see as part of the SLO Little Theatre’s After Hours series beginning April 17.

Alongside Trudy, you’ll find 11 other women in Wagner’s show. There’s Brandy and Tina, two seasoned prostitutes; there’s Chrissy, an enthusiastic aerobics instructor; and then there’s Agnus Angst, a teenage punk with an artistic temperament. In a series of monologues, these characters muse on everything and anything in between, from feminism to Cuisinarts. In 1986, Lily Tomlin won the Tony Award for Best Actress for her career-defining performance in the show. Long-time SLO Little Theatre director Suzy Newman will be taking center stage for this versatile, moving, and madcap show.

See The Search for Signs of the Intelligent Life in the Universe at the SLO Little Theatre beginning April 17 through 26. Showtimes are 9:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday; 7 p.m. on Sunday. Tickets are $20. For more information, visit slolittletheatre.org or call 786-2440.
