SLO firefighter gets axed

Despite having his criminal case dismissed following a highly publicized mistrial, a San Luis Obispo firefighter has been let go.

On Nov. 6, John Ryan Mason, a 10-year veteran of the department, was fired from his position with the city following a lengthy trial for assault and battery stemming from a late-night incident at a SLO bar and grill, according to Human Resources Director Monica Irons. He had previously been placed on unpaid administrative leave prior to his trial in May, she said.

The city could not release any additional information due to personnel confidentiality issues.

Mason had 15 days to appeal the decision, though it was unclear as of press time if an appeal had been filed.

The District Attorney’s Office elected not to seek another trial for Mason after jurors failed to reach an agreement on whether he was responsible for the severe beating of Los Osos resident Jory Brigham in June 2011.
