SLO fire chief announces his retirement

San Luis Obispo Fire Chief John Callahan is retiring. The chief announced his retirement at the July 6 meeting of the City Council, coming to the podium and apparently surprising some of the City Council members.

Callahan served as SLO fire chief for five years. Before that, he gave 32 years to the Los Angeles Fire Department, where he was a deputy chief. He’ll remain in the area after retiring in November. He said he intends to continue his work with the YMCA where he’s completing his year as board president.

“I can’t tell you what a terrific chief he has been—one of the best I’ve worked with in my 50-plus years of service with the city,” Mayor Dave Romero said in a city press release.
