Silly laws are silly laws

I guess the downtown businesses are getting their comeuppance since they are now faced with breaking a silly law preventing them from “dumping coins in downtown meters (Shredder, Dec 23-30).

When nonprofit and political booths wish to display bumper stickers at their booths at Farmers’ Market, many agree that it’s a silly rule that prevents these groups from doing so. The Downtown Association is adamant in denying our groups the opportunity of having bumper stickers, representing our positions, at our booths because they claim it adds to sticker graffiti. However, it was repeatedly demonstrated that the stickers on downtown poles were mostly from downtown stores themselves, particularly those specializing in surfing or sports.

Maybe the Downtown Association can now reflect on their silly rule preventing nonprofit booths from getting donations by offering bumper stickers to their patrons. And maybe now they will be gracious enough to request the city council rescind that rule.
