Sign, sign, everywhere a sign

San Luis Obispo sign artist Sean Beauchamp, of Southpaw Sign Co., has been painting signs since he was 13 years old. Beauchamp’s early sign-painting adventures included working in an L.A. sign sweatshop and as a resident sign painter for a traveling Mexican circus. Culled from 28 years of sign painting, Beauchamp’s work is currently on display in the ARTS Obispo exhibit “Letters to the Universe,” which hangs through August.

Divided into three themes—nostalgia, skill sets, and story—the exhibit provides art enthusiasts with a cross-section of Beauchamp’s artistic signage, as well as the variety of crafts and skills needed to create these functional works of art. Neon signs, hand lettering, calligraphy, drawing, brushwork, and three-dimensional designs will be showcased.

Beauchamp, who learned gold-leaf technique from expert craftsman Rick Glawson, has recently applied the gold leaf on the Seagrave, San Luis Obispo’s first fire engine. The fully restored red engine will be on display in the Creamery parking lot during the “Letters to the Universe” opening reception during Art After Dark on Friday, Aug. 5, from 6 to 9 p.m. Ortman Winery will be pouring.

“Letters to the Universe” takes place at ARTS Space Obispo, located in the SLO Creamery at 570 Higuera St., suite 165, in downtown San Luis Obispo. The show hangs through Saturday, Sept. 3.
