She'll be the judge of that

The San Luis Obispo County Superior Courthouse has a new judge, and her name is Rita.

On Dec. 27, California Gov. Jerry Brown’s office announced the appointment of Rita C. Federman to the vacant local judgeship seat left after the retirement of Hon. Judge Teresa Estrada-Mullany.

Federman, 50, of San Luis Obispo, has served since 2004 as a United States Magistrate judge at the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California. She previously served from 1991 to 1999 as the district’s judicial staff attorney.

According to Brown’s office, her annual compensation will be $178,789.

Federman, a Democrat, earned a Juris Doctorate degree from the California Western School of Law and a Bachelor of Arts degree from Boston College, according to a press release issued by Brown’s office.

She currently serves on the board of directors for the San Luis Obispo Legal Alternatives Corporation.

The Robing Room, a user-generated website that rates judges based on temperament and other factors, did not have any rating for Federman as of press time.

According to SLO Superior Court Executive Secretary Jan Michael, Federman was officially sworn in on Dec. 28.
